Immerse yourself in the captivating story of Xenophon the Athenian, a student of Socrates born in 431 B.C. After serving the Spartans and enduring exile from Athens, he found solace in Scillus, thanks to Sparta, before ultimately settling in Corinth. Xenophon’s extraordinary life journey concluded with his death in 354 B.C. In Anabasis, which means a journey from the coast to the heart of a nation, he recounts his harrowing trek to Persia with a group of Greek mercenaries. Their mission was to aid Cyrus in his ambitious attempt to usurp the throne from his brother, Artaxerxes. This enthralling narrative not only reveals the obstacles faced during their expedition but also underscores Xenophon’s crucial role in the arduous return journey that spanned from 401 B.C. to March 399 B.C.
