  • 25. The One Mistake Great Leaders Make with Guest Dr. Bahiyyah Maroon
    2026/08/30
Two teachers got angry about the same note. Only one was angry about the right thing.

Dr. Bahiyyah Maroon opens this conversation in a sixth-grade classroom — a cruel note signed by every student, a math teacher furious that his lesson was interrupted, and a science teacher furious about the cruelty itself. Those two men, she says, are the two prototypical business leaders. Most of us learned leadership long before we had a title.

In Episode 25 of Amplify Hope Today, Simon T. Bailey welcomes Dr. Maroon — leadership anthropologist, PhD from UC Santa Cruz, and author of Black Lives, American Love — for a conversation about what actually breaks in organizations.

Her diagnosis is one phrase: power failure. Power wielded on behalf of people it never consulted. She traces it through the diversity committee staffed by skin color rather than expertise, through the CEO reporting workforce sentiment to a board without having had the conversations, through philanthropy that arrives already certain what a community needs — and lands it on the question she says almost no leader answers honestly: Am I willing to share power, and to what degree?

She also does something rarer. She refuses to tell half a story. Her argument about asset-based framing — that the questions we ask about communities determine the solutions we get — turns on a historical detail most listeners won't know, and it reframes the entire conversation about who needs help and who has been solving problems all along.

    You'll learn:
    • Why "some" and "many" are the two most honest words in a leader's vocabulary
    • Three questions that reveal whether you share power or only describe sharing it
    • Why grocery stores don't open in certain neighborhoods — and why the answer is a business-model problem, not a moral one
    • What Costco and Wegmans do structurally that most organizations refuse to
    • Why the real definition of ambition might be a thousand people succeeding because you made room
Dr. Bahiyyah Maroon holds a PhD in anthropology from UC Santa Cruz and is the author of Black Lives, American Love, a collection of essays on race and resilience. Her second book is nearly finished.

Get Black Lives, American Love wherever books are sold.

Simon's twelfth book, Amplify Hope: Lead From Where You Are Standing, releases October 1.

  • 24. The Hidden Fear Driving Every Decision You Make | Kim Giles
    2026/08/23
Why do two people facing the same pressure react in completely opposite ways?

Why do some leaders build trust in a room while others quietly drain it?

On this episode of Amplify Hope Today, Simon T. Bailey sits down with Kim Giles — founder of the 12 Shapes Behavioral Assessment and author of How Humans Are Wired — for a conversation about what's actually happening underneath human behavior.

Kim's premise is that every person operates from one of two places: fear or clarity. And the fear comes in two forms.

Fear of failure: I'm not enough.
Fear of loss: I'm not safe.

Everything else — how you lead, how you argue, how you parent, what you say yes to — is downstream of those two sentences.

    In this episode:
    • The two fears underneath every human decision — and which one is running you
    • Why fear literally shuts down the part of your brain that thinks clearly
    • What personality tests get wrong (and why you keep testing as a different type)
    • How to tell whether you're listening or just waiting to talk
    • The question that de-escalates almost any workplace conflict
    • Why the leader everyone trusts and the leader everyone fears are doing the same thing differently
Whether you lead a team, run a business, coach, or are raising kids — this one gives you language for what you've been sensing but couldn't name.

  • 23. The Media Empire of the Mind - Why You Can’t Let Go
    2026/08/16
What is the Media Empire of Your Mind? It's the private broadcast running about you, inside you, most of it unexamined. You didn't write the programming. You inherited it — from family, from failure, from the one person whose opinion you never stopped carrying. And it quietly decides what you believe is available to you.

Most people never think to change the channel. They assume the broadcast is the truth.

In this episode of Amplify Hope Today, Simon T. Bailey shows you how to audit the station and take it back. He tells the story of snorkeling in the Red Sea and what fear looks like when you're forty feet down. He explains why capable people settle for crumbs and call it gratitude. And he traces the chain that runs your life whether you examine it or not: thoughts shape choices, choices create behaviors, behaviors decide your future.

If you're stuck — in the career, the relationship, the finances, the body, the season — this is not a pep talk. It's an audit.

    You'll learn:
    • How limiting beliefs operate below the level of language
    • Why "settling for crumbs" feels like humility and functions like surrender
    • The mindset shift that changes what you think is available to you
    • Why your first ninety minutes program the entire day
    • How self-awareness became the price of admission to leadership
    About the show:
Amplify Hope Today is hosted by Simon T. Bailey, author of the forthcoming Amplify Hope: Lead From Where You Are Standing (Vital Intelligence Press, October 1, 2026).

  • 22. Why Belief Beats Talent: A Mother, a Son, and the Case for Kind Leadership
    2026/08/09
Austin Franklin started a company at twenty. His mother, Dr. Deidre Franklin, had spent two decades preparing him for it without either of them calling it that.

Together they run Good Nature Life. In this episode of Amplify Hope Today, they sit down with Simon T. Bailey to talk about what actually transfers from one generation to the next — and what doesn't.

What did Austin learn about success that most young entrepreneurs miss?

That it starts with belief, not talent. He unpacks what that looked like in practice during the first year of building a company before he had the credentials anyone expects.

How do you raise a leader?
Dr. Deidre walks through the intentional parenting choices, the role of faith, and the daily practice of positive affirmation that shaped Austin long before he had a business card.

What happens to a family after tremendous loss? Dr. Deidre shares openly about grief, healing, and the work of rebuilding — and what that season taught her about leading while broken.

Why is kindness an underrated leadership skill? Because it's mistaken for softness.

This conversation makes the case that it's the more durable strategy, particularly when talent runs out.How do you fail without losing yourself?

The Franklins offer practical language for separating what happened from who you are.

This one is for entrepreneurs, executives, educators, and anyone in the middle of becoming.

  • 21. Critical Thinking: The One Skill AI Can't Replace | Dr. Lawrence Drake
    2026/08/02
The short answer: AI should strengthen human judgment, not substitute for it. The leaders who thrive in the AI era are the ones who keep asking better questions than the machine can answer. Can AI make us smarter — or is it quietly replacing our ability to think? On this episode of Amplify Hope Today, Simon T. Bailey sits down with Dr. Lawrence Drake — leadership expert, media psychologist, and former Fortune 500 CEO who has led global organizations across more than 60 countries — for a conversation about what stays human when the machines get good. Most organizations are asking the wrong question. They're asking what AI can replace. The better question is what AI can amplify. Is AI actually replacing critical thinking? Not on its own. But outsourcing judgment is a habit that forms quietly, one convenient shortcut at a time. Dr. Drake explains the difference between using AI to think faster and using it to avoid thinking — and why the second one costs organizations far more than it saves. What's the difference between media literacy and media fluency?Literacy is knowing that a message was constructed. Fluency is knowing who constructed it, what it was built to make you do, and whether you're going to let it. Dr. Drake draws the line clearly, and it reframes how leaders should evaluate every piece of information crossing their desk. How do great CEOs build a culture of critical thinking? It isn't a training module. It's what leaders reward in meetings, what questions they ask first, and whether it's safe to disagree with the person who signs the checks. Dr. Drake shares what he learned building these cultures from the top seat. Why is the Socratic Method still the most underused leadership tool?Because asking is slower than telling — and most executives are optimized for speed. Dr. Drake makes the case that the quality of your questions sets the ceiling on the quality of your organization's thinking. Is curiosity really a predictor of leadership success? It may be the strongest one. Curiosity is what keeps a leader learning after the title stops requiring it — and it's the trait most visible to the people deciding whether to follow you. What does grace have to do with performance?More than most performance frameworks admit. Dr. Drake explains how grace changes what people are willing to risk, admit, and attempt — and why that shows up in results. Why should learning be a lifestyle instead of a corporate event?Because a two-day offsite expires. A learning habit compounds. Dr. Drake describes what it looks like when an executive treats learning as an operating discipline rather than a line item.Who this episode is for:Business leaders, C-suite executives, entrepreneurs, educators, HR and people leaders, coaches, and anyone building a career that has to outlast the current wave of technology.About the guest:Dr. Lawrence Drake is a leadership expert, media psychologist, and former Fortune 500 CEO with decades of experience leading global organizations across more than 60 countries.About the show:Amplify Hope Today is hosted by Simon T. • 19. Feeling Stressed? Change This One Perspective
    2026/07/19
In this episode, Simon reframes the stress conversation entirely. Anxiety before the big presentation. Pressure in a season of change. The emotional weight of leading when nothing feels certain. These aren’t signs you’re breaking — they’re signs you’re being stretched into someone new.

You’ll learn how to read stress as a signal instead of a sentence, why growth almost never feels like growth while it’s happening, and one perspective shift that turns pressure into fuel.

If you’ve been carrying tension and quietly wondering if something’s wrong with you — this episode is your permission slip to see it differently.
