Why is St Joseph’s feast day on March 19th?

Close to Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th.  Joseph is intimately connected to Jesus and Mary, and is the guardian of the Holy Family.

The biblical definition of a Just man is one who does the will of God in all things.

Joseph was a dreamer. 

The Birth of Jesus.   18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23   “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” 24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. 25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

For men who are dreamers and planners and want to be in control of their own destiny in this world.  Or maybe your life hasn’t gone quite how you dreamt it would.  Or you feel like a failure or insignificant or uninfluential in this world.

Trust all your dreams to Joseph.

Here is a trusting devotion to the sleeping St Joseph that I have been doing:  write down a prayer petition and place it under an image or figure of St Joseph sleeping, with the firm trust that he communicated with God through dreams, and rested with confidence in knowing and doing the Lord’s will.  I can personally testify that Joseph loves to bring our prayers to Jesus so that our Lord may answer them.

Joseph was a man of action.  After knowing the will of God in his life, he promptly acted.  He did not delay.

Joseph has helped me to hear the voice of God, to arise, and act with love.

St Joseph continues to help me strive to be that kind of man of trust and action.

I know Joseph will help you.  You just have to tell him to help you!

Of old, it was said to the needy and suffering people in the kingdom of Egypt:  ‘Go to Joseph, and do all he shall say to you.’ (Gen. 41:55).
