Welcome to After the Flame - a podcast created by young people, for young people.


We’re a group of young people aged 15-17 years old from Manchester UK who are currently completing a podcast scholarship with MediaCity based not-for-profit, The Reporters’ Academy.


After the Flame, a behind-the-scenes Olympic podcast, will go beyond what we see on the world stage. We’ll be talking to athletes, organisers, coordinators, coaches, staff and even family members to discuss what it’s really like to be a part of the Olympics, the impact it has on individuals as well as teams, and what lessons have been learnt and can be shared with young people embarking on their own future paths.

The Reporters’ Academy (TRA) is a non-profit youth training organisation, based in MediaCity, Salford, UK, that provides behind-the-scenes media industry training to young people from local communities. Founded 11 years ago with the aim of raising the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and have since trained and supported over 1,000 young people.

    In this episode of After the Flame, we had the pleasure to speaking to Olympian Long Jumper, Abigail Irozuru.

    We discussed what it takes to make it to the Olympics and what life is like as a retired athlete. Irozuru also talked about the impact sport has had on her personal life since being a child but also touched upon the growing drop-off rates of girls and how she encourages them to try and stay in sport.

    Abigail also talked to us about the important role her Faith has played in her career, especially during tough times and injuries, as well as gave us an insight into what the future may hold!
