  • Podcast S1.4 - How does supervision help us and each other?
    2023/01/12

This podcast is the fourth in a mini-series that focuses on supervision. I'm joined again by Karina Dancza and Anita Volkert, as co-editors of our recent book. We focus on how supervision can help us as individuals and how it can help each other as we continue to develop as health and care practitioners, including in the way we develop as supervisors and supervisees. We discuss how, if it’s done well, supervision can help to maintain interest and joy at work – a key ingredient to support retention of the workforce. We explore the benefits of different types of supervision including peer and group supervision and share some of our experiences where supervision has helped us to learn, develop and grow.

  • Podcast S1.3 - Do supervision structures stifle supervision?
    2023/01/12

This podcast is part of a mini-series that focuses on supervision. I'm joined again by Karina Dancza and Anita Volkert, as co-editors of our book, Supervision for occupational therapy: practical guidance for supervisors and supervisees.  In this third podcast, we focus on the content of supervision and explore if the structures can stifle the quality and content of supervision. We debate how paperwork can sometimes encourage a tick-box culture and can even be weaponised as a tool of power which causes intentional or unintentional harm. How do we make sure the structures function as a tool to enable connections and effective supervision?  And how can we avoid them becoming the master?

  • Podcast S1.2 - Are superheroes welcome in supervision?
    2023/01/12

In this second podcast as part of a mini-series that focuses on supervision, I'm joined by my fellow book editors and authors, Karina Dancza and Anita Volkert.  We debate if the concept of health and care practitioners as superheroes negatively impacts on the connections we make in our working relationships and our ability to be ourselves, including in supervision. We discuss how the narrative is so deeply embedded in some cultures that it might be useful to acknowledge it and learn how to work around it. We also discuss how understanding ourselves, including our own cultures, values, attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs, could help us choose when to remove the superhero cape, to enable culturally safe and effective practice.

  • Podcast S1.1 - The meaning of supervision
    2023/01/12

This podcast is part of a mini-series that focuses on supervision. I'm joined by Karina Dancza and Anita Volkert as co-editors of our book, Supervision for occupational therapy: practical guidance for supervisors and supervisees.

We explore the meaning of supervision and why it is important for many different people including us as health and care practitioners, the organisations we work for and the people we serve. We discuss the value for the supervisor as well as the supervisee. Done well, supervision provides a space to enhance safe and effective practice and support our wellbeing.

We share the 3Cs for Effective Supervision (Connections, Content and Continuing development), a Framework which emerged from reflecting on our collective experiences and as a product of our book writing efforts.  We'd like to encourage thinking about our supervision practice including what we are doing well, the challenges we face and what we can do to make it better.

  • Introduction to AHP thinking space
    2023/01/12

I've been brewing the idea for these podcasts for a while and it's great to be here now.  I think we live in an increasingly noisy world and this can impact on our ability to find time to pause, think and learn - or maybe that's just me!  What I want and hope to do with this podcast series is provide us with some space to think about a single topic related to our careers as Allied Health Professionals.  There are no right or wrong answers. Each podcast is no more than 20 minutes. We sign off early, leaving you with a few questions to think about and some music and space to capture your own thoughts.  At the heart of this project is my belief that if we can do whatever we can to think, learn and develop then everybody benefits, including and especially the people we serve.  Thank you for joining us and I look forward to thinking and learning with you.
