  • Regenerative Economics: Reinventing Businesses for Sustainability | Graham Boyd | A Thrivable Future: Episode 20
    2023/07/30

The business world is largely driven by chasing financial growth. People tend to act, assuming that averages will be consistent and apply to everyone. But in reality, this rarely happens. As a result, businesses often find themselves needing to take more resources and push their workers harder. Is there a better way? Graham Boyd is an author, speaker, and consultant who uses the expertise gathered across three careers (including a particle physicist, manager with Procter and Gamble, and serial startup founder) to help businesses reinvent themselves to help solve the challenges facing our world – in particular, how can we address the impending climate crisis? And could multinational businesses contribute to the solution? We talk about the regenerative economy, a new way of thinking about businesses and their role in economies. It proposes that businesses are living parts of an ecosystem, and that they should work together to build a regenerative global economy that focuses on restoring our ecosystems and regenerating our planet - making a thrivable world for all. We also highlight how considering capital outside of financial capital (including human and natural capital, not just financial capital) can guide better business decisions, and how the idea that average outcomes apply to all individuals can lead businesses astray. By reinventing how businesses operate, we can potentially make a thrivable future where humanity can thrive with nature (and each other). (42 mins). --- If you are interested in learning more about the topics we've discussed here, Graham Boyd has published several books on these. • Can Democracies Achieve Climate Action? | Dr. Ron Levy | A Thrivable Future: Episode 19
    2022/11/14

Democracies empower people to influence the future of their nations - but if we want our governments to create a thrivable future, we need correct and timely information. But how can we achieve this?
We discuss with Dr. Ron Levy, Associate Professor at the Australian National University. As a researcher who explores the intersection between public law and political theory - especially deliberative democratic theory, he has won several academic awards and has published numerous works on law and political theory in books and journals in at least five countries.
Today, we discuss how democratic institutions in both Australia and across the world can both ensure peace and benefit our climate, the role that national constitutions can play in change, and the obstacles that nations have to making changes for a world where we live in harmony with nature (and each other). People and governments can lead the world to a thrivable future. (44 mins)

    2022/09/11

Our world is made up of interconnected systems. But many of these systems are designed around maximising growth at the expense of others - which is unsustainable. What can we do to change this?

Dr. Anneloes Smitsman is an expert in achieving societal transformations and systemic barriers to change. Her Ph.D. dissertation ‘Into the Heart of Systems Change’ is part of a systemic worldwide effort to transform economics, education, politics, and governance through her proposed Transition Plan for a Thrivable Civilization.

We talk about Sustainable Development Goal 16 - around peace, justice and the institutions - from local councils to global organisations - that ensure a safe and thriving world for all.

We also highlight the issues of corruption, the effects of laws and policies on societies, and how we can all improve the systems that govern us. Through systemic change, we can potentially make a thrivable future where we all live in harmony with each other. (36 mins)
