    2022/03/01
In this episode, Helen Dickinson finds out where the imposter syndrome (or monster) came from and why the concept itself is damaging you. Followed by a ten-minute hit of hypnosis to keep you moving forward, no matter what obstacles are put in your way. Transcription: Hi, welcome to this week's episode of a hit of hypnosis with me, Helen Dickinson. This week, I'm talking about something where we've all really been hypnotised, and that is imposter syndrome or the imposter monster. So what is the imposter monster? It's a term coined in 1978 as 'imposter phenomenon', and it's defined as not having a sense of your own achievements and success, yet others will think that you are successful. And I can really resonate with this because as all of us have done, we all have fears. We all have doubts. And think occasionally that we're not good enough. And this is something that I'd never heard of until I moved into therapy and hypnotherapy. I'd never heard of the imposter monster. I'd never heard of imposter syndrome. So it's really interesting to me to find out about the history and how long it's been around for. And also it's something now that I tend to hear on a daily basis. So I've been really intrigued to find out more about it and find out what's going on. My interest was also piqued a few weeks ago when I came across an article in Harvard business review, entitled 'Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome'. Now it's an article from February, 2021 it's Harvard Business Review's, most read article, and I think I've added quite a few counts onto that because I've read it several times going over it to really take him what this is saying. It's a fantastic article. Although it's something, both men and women identify as having had, it's usually women and even more, so women of color that it's attributed to. However, it's not the person that needs to become more confident because as I mentioned in last week's podcast, doing something new is natural. It's natural nerves. We all have that feeling of, "Are we going to fit in?", "Are we going to belong?", "Are we going to feel silly because we can't do something straight away?". However, it's the environments that need to change because we're breaking through into industries and sectors where they've been dominated by a majority. And it's easy for this majority to tell us that our points are not valid, or that we don't belong, or to passive-aggressively bully us into not wanting to be there. At the minute, I'm doing workshops with women who are going through menopause. And six out of ten women have Thought about or thinking about retiring through menopause because they're finding work difficult and they're not getting support. Now, I know this is going off on a little bit of a tangent in terms of imposter syndrome and imposter monster, but if you're trying to speak out about how you feeling and you're not getting validated then you feel as though you're not worthy. So it all is part of the bigger picture. So the onus really isn't on us to change. The onus is on the environment and the business, the industry, the sector, whatever we're breaking through to it's up to them to make sure that we're supported and we are welcome, and we are seen as credible members of that community. The amazing Brene Brown interviewed the authors of the Harvard Business Review article in her podcast and Brene made a great point and that is the barrier to people being themselves is the culture people have built at the top to protect themselves. From a personal perspective. I'd never heard of the term imposter syndrome or imposter monster until I started working in therapy and hypnotherapy. So this is quite interesting because I've worked in male dominated industries for the majority of my life. I was in the security industry for 18 years. I eventually had my own business and I traveled the UK teaching personnel, stewards like Man United. And I used to teach Home Office approved control and restraint techniques, and conflict management. I'm going to come to the point of this after I've given you another example. Breaking through as a DJ, I felt sexism and I felt ageism. And don't get me wrong at times I have thought, "Is it because I'm not good enough?", but the stats have told me otherwise. The mixes that I was uploading were getting thousands and thousands of plays, people were getting in touch with me saying, why are you not playing here? So if I'd have been aware of this imposter syndrome at the time, maybe I would have thought that it's me that's not good enough. However, the music industry is male-dominated. It's a young person's industry. And so back to the point, we've given this thing a name we've called it imposter syndrome, imposter phenomenon, the imposter monster, But if we don't have this name for it, then we see things as they are. They're either healthy nerves for starting something new or, there are actual barriers there. We've literally created this monster. And...

"My hair needs to be longer/shorter/a different colour." "I need a DSLR camera/studio lighting/a new microphone." All the dumb things I told myself to put off starting a podcast and YouTube channel. In this first episode, I take a look at confidence and give you a hypnosis session to boost yours.

By the way. Your hair is just fine.
