  • Ep 346 December 2025 Roundup
    2025/12/04

It's the beginning of December 2025 which means to me that I get to catchup with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about information she has brought to our attention over the past month.

First, by December 6th, let me remind you about signing the e-Petition from Celiac Canada to request that the Federal Government consider a Gluten-Free Tax Credit. Here's a link to sign the digital e-Petition - https://www.celiac.ca/petition-high-cost-of-gluten-free-food/

Ellen and I also spoke about a Survey that is online from Conquer Studies through Dr. Diana Major and the University of Alberta regarding the cost of gluten free food for families. If you are an adult with celiac disease or the parent of a child with celiac disease, your opinion and experiences will help form a true picture of what Canadians are experiencing.

We talked about the Gluten-Free marketplace that was held recently in Charlottetown, PEI.

Ellen and I spoke about issues around AI and how that is affecting some recipe websites – the lesson here is to follow bloggers you know and trust.

Both Ellen and I have been travelling over the past couple of months, and we chat about some of the gluten-free aspects of our adventures.

  • Ep 345 Cinde's Adventures in a Gluten Free Kitchen
    2025/11/14

On this episode I'm again speaking with Cinde Little, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet regarding a new way for those of us who want to cook and bake gluten free, whether it be for ourselves or for others.

Cinde has organized a membership group to try recipes, communicate and learn together how to cook and bake gluten free. She hopes to take the anxiety of trying new recipes with lots of tips to help you understand how gluten free can be delicious for the whole family. Cinde is creating a welcoming community – something we can all use.

Cinde also makes us aware of the negative effects of AI on the world of recipe bloggers. This is something to take note of as your time and money to make gluten free foods is valuable, so you want to be consulting trusted resources online.

You can find out more from Cinde online at everydayglutenfreegourmet and look into her membership community at everydayglutenfreegourmet.ca/adventures-in-a-gluten-free-kitchen/

You can also find Cinde on Facebook and Pinterest at Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet, and on Instagram at everyday.gf.gourmet.

  • Ep 344 November 2025 Roundup
    2025/11/06

It's the beginning of November 2025 and my opportunity to discuss news and information that has come out in the past month with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com. Ellen keeps us up to date on what's happening regarding celiac disease and gluten free.

First, let me urge you to sign the petition Celiac Canada is putting forth to the federal government regarding the cost of gluten free food and how they can assist the celiac population. This is a re-issue of the petition from last year, as unfortunately it died when an election was called. Last time we received more than 26,000 signatures. Let's try for 30,000 this time. Please click the link and send it on to anyone else who you think is interested on our behalf. You can find out more and sign the petition at –

    https://www.celiac.ca/petition-high-cost-of-gluten-free-food/

Ellen and I spoke at length about some of the information that came from the recent International Celiac Conference in Finland. Melissa Secord from the CCA was part of a Canadian "team" attending who did a great job presenting and interacting with experts from all over the world. We touched on research regarding a promising advancement in testing for celiac disease by a simple blood test. We also speak about research to try and "turn-off" the celiac switch and learn more about that.

We learn why some people who think they might be celiac, might instead need to be on a temporary FODMAP diet to reset their digestive system with the help of a dietician.

  • Ep 341 Selena DeVries RD Catchup
    2025/09/15

Over this past summer I've been asked by different people if I know of a local dietician who is particularly knowledgeable about Celiac Disease. Unfortunately, I have to say I don't, but there is a great solution for us with Selena DeVries RD, as she has an online practice, can be paid by many healthcare plans and she herself is celiac.

In our conversation, Selena explains how to deal with ongoing symptoms even if you've been symptom free for a long time. She explains how lactose issues as well as thyroid issues can develop as we age – something that was news to me. Selena also talks us through how, by having her online practice, she can work directly with your doctor.

You can find valuable information by following Selena on Instagram at celiac_made_simple and you can find her website at selenard.com

  • Ep 340 September 2025 Roundup
    2025/09/04

It's the beginning of September, so my chance to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about articles and studies she has brought to our attention over the past month.

During August, Ellen visited the Kinnikinnick storefront in Edmonton and the pictures she took of the amazing baked goods would make any celiac's mouth water. My Visit to Kinnikinnick Foods' Store Front in Edmonton

Ellen published a study about teens with celiac disease and the link with body image and potential mental health issues – this is a must read for parents of celiac children. There is good news in that the teens who strictly adhered to the gluten free diet were less likely to have body image and anxiety issues. Body Image Dissatisfaction, Depression & Anxiety in Celiac Teens

The big news on the scientific front is a newly formulated "atlas" of the cells in the gut differentiate which cells are involved in the gluten reaction. This new discovery will aid researchers world-wide in targeting therapies and even a cure in the future. New Understanding | How the Small Intestine Reacts to Gluten in Celiac Patients

Ellen has updated her Fast Food Dining page for the US. This list takes you to the webpages of different fast food restaurants and what they say regarding gluten and allergens in their restaurants – an invaluable guide. UPDATED! Gluten-Free Guide to Fast Food Dining - USA

I was able give an update on the community partners and their donations to Celiac Camp – Purest Gluten Free, O'Doughs, Only Oats, Schar, Kinnikinnick Foods, FreeYumm, Rizopia, Gutsies, Pilling Foods, Cavendish Farms, Corn Thins & Royal Nuts. With great appreciation – Thank You!

  • Ep #339 Pt 2 What I Learned from My Road Trip
    2025/08/16

This second part of the wrap up conversation with Ellen focused more on the experiences I had in the varied restaurants where we ate on our trip. Breakfast was usually the same and eaten in the hotel room, lunch was on the road and dinner was normally after we'd checked in to our hotel – but those were the only constants. I enjoy different ethnic cuisines, and I treated myself often.

Ellen and I spoke not only about fast food places which primarily made up our lunch choices, but franchise restaurants and why in both cases these can often be your best choices for a gluten free meal.

If you're not familiar with Cinde Little and her recipes, here's the link to the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet as well as a link to The Celiac Scene where you'll find everything Ellen Bayens is working on for us.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to make this trip with my daughter, to experience so much of what a Canadian road trip offers and as well tick a couple of things off my bucket list. Thanks for taking the time to join me while I travelled and now while I look back on a wonderful opportunity to see so much of Canada and do it safely gluten free.
