Luna spends a humid October evening at the abandoned Holy Cross Church outside Elkhart, Kansas, where a rusted bell tower has been ringing at random hours for years. She meets Walt Gunderson, an old man who keeps a vigil in a folding chair, waiting for something he calls 'the toll.' He tells her about the winter of 1974, when the bells rang for three straight nights before a train derailed and killed seventeen people. But Walt says the bells don't mourn the dead—they call them. He shows Luna a Polaroid he took last spring, a blur of upright shapes drifting across the cemetery. Then, at half past midnight, the bell rings again—and Walt stands up, pulls a stopwatch from his vest, and says, 'Hold still. They count us.'
