概要

 In the summer of 2017, I drove out to a dead-end road in northern Nevada called Crow Flats Road. There's a bridge there, a narrow two-lane concrete span over a dry arroyo. I went because my old high school friend Cass had sent me a text that just said 'You need to see this.' When I got there, she was standing on the gravel shoulder next to a man I'd never met. He was holding a tape measure. He'd been measuring the ditch under that bridge for seventy-three days. He told me his name was Paul and that he worked for a company called Stanton Topographic. The story he told me that afternoon is the one I'm going to tell you now. It's about a survey. About what he found in the bend of a dry wash. And about the thing that started calling back.
