The story of Loichi, the blind biwa player who was called to perform for the dead; of Muso, the journeying priest who encountered a man eating goblin; of the samurai who outwitted the ghost of a dead man. "The Boy Who Drew Cats" is a Japanese folk tale collected by Lafcadio Hearn in Japanese Fairy Tales. This is his most anthologized story. It concerns a boy who drew cats everywhere. Everyone in the town thought this was a waste of time until a goblin invaded their temple. They boy, and his cat, then come to the rescue.

小泉八雲の名短編を集めました。「お貞のはなし」「常識」「忠五郎の話」「幽霊滝の伝説」「耳なし芳一」の五編です。特に耳なし芳一は小泉八雲の傑作で、この話を知らない日本人は皆無と言ってもいいくらい有名な作品です。

小泉八雲というと「怪談」と連想するが、この話は怖い要素はあるものの「教訓」として聴きたい作品です。物事をシンプルに素直に見る、余計な概念や思い込みを捨てることの大切さが短い作品の中に語られています。

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was an Irish writer known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo. His book Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, comprises two parts, the first being the "Kwaidan Proper" and the second, "Insect-Studies", which consists of an essay each on ants, butterflies and mosquitos. According to the author, most of the folk tales and ghost stories in the first part were translated from old Japanese texts. The themes encompass resurrection, sacrifice, magic, and the realm of dreams.
