あらすじ・解説

"Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference." (Frederick Douglass, 1845)

The prophets of old were not easy to listen to because they did not flatter. They did not cajole. They spoke hard words that often chafed and unsettled their listeners. Like the Old Testament prophets, and more recent prophetic voices like Frederick Douglass, Dr. Eric Mason calls the evangelical church to a much-needed reckoning. In a time when many feel confused, complacent, or even angry, he challenges the church to:

  • Be aware - to understand that the issue of justice is not a black issue, it's a kingdom issue. To learn how the history of racism in America and in the church has tainted our witness to a watching world.
  • Be redemptive - to grieve and lament what we have lost and to regain our prophetic voice, calling the church to remember our gospel imperative to promote justice and mercy.
  • Be active - to move beyond polite, safe conversations about reconciliation and begin to set things aright for our soon-coming King, who will be looking for a woke church.

Very Relevant Material.

The author was very relevant with his topics. I appreciated his practicality. Worth reading again because there were several nuggets to digest within the content that I need to rehear. The mundane/monotone delivery would be my only drawback on the audiobook. I needed some passion and conviction with some of them points!

Definitely a necessary read!

This book was amazing! It definitely knocks at the heart to help the church openup for a heart check. I believe every leader should read it if they understand the assignment of the “Woke” church.

Christ Centered

Riddled with the gospel and how we need the gospel to talk about race.

Eye opening

This is what the church needs. We need to hear the past to redeem the future and try our hardest to mirror the love of God to all people. We are better together.

Different than title implies - and good!

"Woke" is used in historical (not current sense). Helped me reconcile role of faith in racial reconciliation.

Timely

While I’m just now reading/hearing this straight through, it has come at the best time. Everywhere I look is bad news, worse news, and hopeless news. Dr. Eric Mason, does not scoot around the bad, nor does he downplay the realities of our country and culture in general. Rather, he gives a call to action. A call to believe the gospel we preach, and to see in ourselves the redemptive qualities of our Savior - mind you, the same redeeming qualities that we find so beautiful. We have slept on the issue of race for quite some time, it seems right that we wake up.

A timely and timeless message

The most eloquent and relevant statement on “wholeness” for this generation, previous generations, and future generations who wish to be equipped and elevated above substandard thinking. Dr. Mason’s examination of American history and the black experience comes from a heart of gospel revelation and centers on what (Who) truly matters most.
