あらすじ・解説

Jack Gladney is the creator and chairman of Hitler studies at the College-on-the-Hill.

This is the story of his absurd life - a life that is going well enough until a chemical spill from a rail car releases an Airborne Toxic Event, and Jack is forced to confront his biggest fear: his own mortality.

White Noise is an effortless combination of social satire and metaphysical dilemma in which Don DeLillo exposes our rampant consumerism, media saturation and novelty intellectualism. It captures the particular strangeness of life lived when the fear of death cannot be denied, repressed or obscured and ponders the role of the family in a time when the very meaning of our existence is under threat.

Dont be put off by the other reviews!

This had been on my to-read list for a while but I wasnt sure why - the previous reviews put me off trying it but glad I did. I really enjoyed the book, the details & charachters made it such a real story, always enjoy books that prompt you on the meaning of things. The narrator, yes I understand the reviews but once you get used to the voice, I actually think ut suits the story very well. Narrator was good at different charachters which many narrators cant pull off, esp female ones!

Great novel, terrible reading

Don Delillo is my favourite living writer. I love this book, but it is 15 years since I read it, so I thought that I would use my Audible credit to remain myself of the genius contained within. It is close to unlistenable. The narrator reads as if he is reading the instructions to a kitchen utensil. He also sounds so much older than Jack Gladney is supposed to be. So disappointing, but the book is still a classic.

So boring I can’t remember the story I’m listening to!

This book came highly recommended from friends so I bought it straight away on audible. The narrator is terrible. Listening to this book has been painful. I’m up to chapter 14 and still can’t follow the story due to the monotonous narration. This is the first book I have not been able to finish listening to. I’m out!

Genius, but know what you’re getting into

Well written, satirical, depressing as cancer.

Too real to be read during a COVID lockdown. Should be read during a lockdown simulation instead

narration is dreadful

I have read White Noise before but it didnt seem as boring as it did being read out in this way. The narration was flat and with no intonation whether Jack was speaking to his children, his wife or somebody he wanted to kill.
