In the autumn of 1934, in the garden behind a physics institute in Rome, a group of young men lowered cylinders of silver into an ornamental pond with goldfish in it, and discovered slow neutrons. The pond was not chosen for its elegance. It was chosen because it held water, it was ten steps from the laboratory, and it was Saturday.Eight years later the same piece of physics required four hundred tons of machined graphite, a squash court beneath a football stadium, a crew of dozens, a corporation, a government, and a war.Enrico Fermi built both.He was the last physicist who could close the whole circuit alone: invent the theory, design the apparatus, wind the coils, take the readings, do the arithmetic on the back of an envelope, and explain the answer to a room of graduate students before dinner. He also personally built the machine that made such a person impossible ever again. This book is about that hinge, and about the strange discipline that made Fermi what he was — not a method for knowing everything, but a method for deciding what not to know. The title cuts three ways, and every one of them is in the book. Fermi split the uranium nucleus in Rome and did not see it. He announced two new elements instead, gave them beautiful names, and collected a Nobel Prize for a discovery that had not happened; the fission was hiding behind a sheet of aluminum foil. A chemist named Ida Noddack said so in print, and the profession did not read her.The second sense reverses the sign. The same man named the neutrino, a particle with no charge, almost no mass, and by his own theory almost no way of ever being detected. The editors of a famous journal turned the paper down as too far removed from physical reality. He was right.©2026 Boris Kriger (P)2026 Boris Kriger 物理学 科学
