This is a true story, but it sounds like fiction. Real life rarely follows rules, and memory never arrives in order. It simply shows up when it wants to.
A girl drowns in a river while her parents sit on the shore holding bottles. A veteran returned from Afghanistan hangs off a ninth-floor balcony, not seeking death, but running out of places to scream. At a summer camp in 1986, children from Chernobyl appear quietly one morning, and a young girl realizes she can be the one drowning or the one pulling others under. Dreams fly freely until wires appear, revealing what they meant all along.
Then comes immigration with plastic bags and no English, followed by the sudden realization that everything once considered normal is called child endangerment here. A fifteen-year-old son arrives in America without being asked, making every mistake possible while searching for belonging. When words fail him, he speaks through paint and is seen for a single night. A dog spends six years in a cage before learning the feeling of a gentle hand. A donated organ offers a second chance, yet it is still the wrong life to return to.
These are not separate stories. They form one woman’s memory spanning Soviet Ukraine to suburban Illinois, carrying childhood wounds through second marriages, tracing the things passed down in silence, and marking the moment you decide to stop passing them on. Lana Stasek does not smooth the edges or wrap anything in a neat bow. She simply refuses to forget.
Everything here is deeply personal. One woman’s experience and perspective. Take what resonates, leave the rest.
