あらすじ・解説

A fast-paced account of the year Clara Parkes spent transforming a 676-pound bale of fleece into saleable yarn, and the people and vanishing industry she discovered along the way.

Join Clara Parkes on a cross-country adventure and meet a cast of characters that includes the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Travel the country with her as she meets a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins.

In pursuit of the perfect yarn, Parkes describes a brush with the dangers of opening a bale (they can explode), and her adventures from Maine to Wisconsin ("the most knitterly state") and back again; along the way, she presents a behind-the-scenes look at the spinners, scourers, genius inventors, and crazy-complex mill machines that populate the yarn-making industry. By the end of the book, you'll be ready to set aside the backyard chickens and add a flock of sheep instead. Simply put, no other book exists that explores American culture through the lens of wool.

Wonderful

If you knit, like I do, this is a worthy read (or, well in my case, listen.) It's a wonderful journey to be a part of, and I wish I had been able to participate in the masters program when it was live. I felt attached to the people introduced in the story, and laughed at the funny parts and cried during the afterword. Eugene, you sound like a wonderful shepherd. Thank you for the journey Ms. Parkes, it's given me so much inspiration.

A revelation

For my family I pay close attention to every bit of food we eat, shopping locally for organic and healthy foods. Rarely, however, have I thought about the source of my clothing except to be pleased when I find something made in America but after reading this book I will make a priority to search out wool that has been produced start to finish in the US.

Great Book.

I was looking for my next book when I stumbled in to it. I clicked on the Sample and a connection was made, I wanted to hear more.... I have never been interested in wool or fabrics but I love stories of people follow their passion and encourage others to do the same.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Very easy to follow and well narrated.

Wonderful work of wool

I’m new -ish to knitting and the allure of wool. Until this book. I am now a firm advocate for wool and all who produce it. The details about yarn production were clear and understandable. Clara’s clear descriptions and passion for her subject shine brightly.
I’m 65, and live in a condo, but I feel like I should start a sheep ranch or mill, to keep the traditions alive.
Thank you for this book.

I LOVED IT!

A beautifully written story of yarn making. Since I work in the industry it was so great to hear someone write of how it is all done. I laughed, I cried and I appreciated our work even more.

Only Clara Parked would do this.

Clara Parkes of Knitters' Review game is the only person who could take on the Great White Bale and succeed. Eugene probably knew this when he offered his clip of wool.

Clara not only succeeded in making yarn, but she has raised awareness of the plight of American textiles. Even LL Bean has moved their operations overseas.

All along her journey, she met intrepid shepherds, indie dyers (Spirit Trail Fiberworks & A Verb for Keeping Warm), small mill owners who are barely hanging on.

So what can we do? Wear wool, use wool. It's that simple. Greater demand will spur supply.

Yarn Journey

What an interesting journey following Clara as she shared her experiences bringing fleece from a 600 pound bale to its completion as skeins of yarn.
This was a very illuminating book about all the processes involved.
As a passionate knitter I thoroughly enjoyed learning about how the yarn I so take for granted got to where I am able to knit with it.
Thank you for taking me along on your journey.

Still thinking about it.

I've learned a lot about the wool industry in America from this! Keeping my eyes peeled for shearing workshops near me...

Lovely Story

I loved this book. Hearing about the details of how yarn is made coupled with the creative non-fiction writing style and soothing voice of the narrator makes for a charming read. Great if you need to de-stress or want something to listen to while you knit/crochet.

Niche, and better for it

Clara Parkes is a yarn/wool/sheep nerd. Her quiet passion brings interest and liveliness. Excellent book.
