A provocative retelling of the Salem Witch Trials that centers on Tituba, the enslaved woman who was the first person accused during the 1692 hysteria. While many historical accounts portray Tituba as a victim of circumstance or a mere scapegoat, Tamanini’s novel takes a "what if" approach, leaning into the historical fantasy genre.
Unlike historical records which suggest Tituba's "confessions" were coerced through abuse, this novel portrays her as a woman who actually possesses and uses magic.
The story reimagines her as a grieving mother seeking vengeance. After the tragic loss of her son, she intentionally uses her powers to conjure spectral images, effectively sparking the paranoia that consumes Salem.
Tituba initially gloats in the chaos she has caused as a form of power over her oppressors (particularly the cruel Reverend Samuel Parris). However, as the accusations lead to actual hangings, she is forced to confront the weight of her actions and seek a path toward redemption.
