Later, a woman in black across the lake. The servants who describe them are certain of the identification and equally certain that both people are dead.
She becomes convinced the children see them too, and are concealing it. What follows is either a rescue or a persecution, and the novella never tells you which.
The most argued-over ghost story in English literature: are the apparitions real, or is the narrator destroying two children to save them from her own imagination? A century of readers has failed to settle it.
