'To be in chains is sometimes safer than to be free.'
Published posthumously in 1925, The Trial is one of Franz Kafka's major literary triumphs: it has been adapted for stage numerous times and is still widely read today.
On the morning of his thirtieth birthday, Josef K. is unexpectedly arrested without being told his crime. As he navigates a maze of surreal courtrooms, unnerving officials and endless delays, he becomes entangled in a system that defies logic and denies resolution. Powerless and disoriented by the absurdity of the trial proceedings, Josef's search for justice turns into a harrowing descent into paranoia and despair. The Trial is Kafka's chilling exploration of bureaucracy, control and the fragility of human dignity in the midst of a faceless authority. This audiobook edition is excellently read by Thomas Judd.
Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was an Austrian-Czech novelist, and is regarded as one of the most significant literary figures of the twentieth century. His work often blended realism with the fantastical; 'Kafkaesque' has become a widely used term which describes an absurd situation, much like the events portrayed in his writing.
