Carlos Castanada was a student of anthropology when he met Don Juan Matus, a Yaqui shaman and the inspiration for Castanada’s The Teachings of Don Juan. In this controversial work, Castanada relays his experiences being challenged by his mentor on his perception of the world and all living things in it.

With The Teachings of Don Juan, Carlos Castaneda chronicled a journey toward enlightenment under the tutelage of Yaqui Indian guru Don Juan. Having sold more than eight million copies of his books around the world, Castaneda has inspired countless readers with his awareness-expanding experiences.

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was an Irish writer known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo. His book Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, comprises two parts, the first being the "Kwaidan Proper" and the second, "Insect-Studies", which consists of an essay each on ants, butterflies and mosquitos. According to the author, most of the folk tales and ghost stories in the first part were translated from old Japanese texts. The themes encompass resurrection, sacrifice, magic, and the realm of dreams.

Don Juan concludes the instruction of Castaneda with his most powerful and mysterious lesson in the sorcerer's art - a dazzling series of visions that are at once an initiation and a deeply moving farewell. 

文科省留学生として派遣された夏目漱石。この2つの随筆には、そのロンドン(倫敦)滞在中での抱腹絶倒の漱石の姿がある。下宿の巨躯の婆さんに半ば命令されて自転車を始めるも、乗りこなすのに四苦八苦。坂道を猛スピードで駆け下りて板塀に激突したり、青年伯爵らと出かけたものの暴走して毒づかれたりと、漱石の悪戦苦闘ぶりを描く『自転車日記』。洋書を買い込むべく、滞在費をぎりぎりに切り詰め安下宿に住むが、知ったかぶりの説教をする夫人や、のべつしゃべりまくる使用人の女、下宿の主人夫婦と家主との大喧嘩などに閉口しながらも、彼らに頼られていく様子を描く『倫敦消息』。英国留学中に深刻なノイローゼになったと言われる漱石とはまるで別人の、留学生活を楽しむ生き生きとした漱石がここにはいる。(C) wis
