Pushkin was one of the giants of 19th century Russian literature but, unlike Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, he was most famous for his short stories. The Shot, one of his most anthologized, tells the story of a terrible revenge.

In a little town, a group of army officers befriend a man named Silvio, who drinks copious amounts of Champagne and enjoys shooting up his room with a pistol. One day during a game of cards, Silvio and a newly transferred officer get into an argument. The proper conclusion in such a situation is a duel, but Silvio declines because he has bigger fish to fry - he’s out to exact vengeance on a man for an offense committed six years prior. Walter Zimmerman delivers a fine performance in a clear voice, inhabiting the world created by Russian writer Alexander Pushkin with ease.
