When an elderly shoeshine man is arrested for a decades-old murder, private investigator Tess Monaghan suspects his confession is far too neat.
A short story featuring Tess Monaghan, New York Times Bestselling author Laura Lippman’s acclaimed private eye
Outside the Brass Elephant on a warm June evening, an argument in the valet line over a smeared shoe quickly escalates into a sidewalk brawl. Tess Monaghan and Whitney Talbot witness an altercation between a boorish restaurant patron and a shoeshine man.
Homicide detective Martin Tull catches the case, only to find the elderly suspect ready to confess to everything without even asking for a lawyer.
When it is discovered that the mild-mannered shoeshine man is wanted for a murder that occurred 40 years in the past, a friend of Tess's asks her to investigate and the case turns out to be full of surprises.
William Harrison seems almost eager to head to prison, but his hazy memory of the crime scene leaves Tess convinced there is more to his sudden surrender.
- Baltimore Setting: Tess navigates the city from the valet line to the wooden benches of Penn Station.
- Cold Case Investigation: A four-decade-old burglary homicide resurfaces with an eyewitness who has been dead for ten years.
