あらすじ・解説

Two best-selling Agatha Christie novels in one great audiobook

What is The Secret of Chimneys? A young drifter finds out when a favor for a friend pulls him into the heart of a deadly conspiracy in this captivating classic from Agatha Christie.

Little did Anthony Cade suspect that an errand for a friend would place him at the center of a deadly conspiracy. Drawn into a web of intrigue, he begins to realize that the simple favor has placed him in serious danger.

As events unfold, the combined forces of Scotland Yard and the French Sûreté gradually converge on Chimneys, the great country estate that hides an amazing secret....

A Murder is Announced in a small-town newspaper advertisement - and Miss Marple must unravel the fiendish puzzle when a crime does indeed occur.

The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn are agog with curiosity when the Gazette advertises, “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.”

A childish practical joke? Or a spiteful hoax? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, the locals arrive at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out and a gun is fired. When they come back on, a gruesome scene is revealed. An impossible crime? Only Miss Marple can unravel it.

Good stories. Hugh Fraser is excellent but..

Emilia Fox is absolutely terrible. When she reads normally she's fine but when there's dialogue, it's painfully annoying. Took away from the story.

But Hugh Fraser is amazing as usual. Enjoyed his narration immensely.

Disappointingly racist

A racist comment toward the end of "the secret of the chimneys" ruined the entire experience and changed my view of Agatha Christie. Some might say it expresses the views of the time, but disappointing non the less.

Mixed feelings

The Secret of Chimneys is probably my favorite Christie book and this was an excellent performance. A Murder is Announced is way down in the list. It doesn’t seem to be as well written to me. Some of the voice characterizations drove me nuts.

Worth listening to and the narrators are amazing.

Well I found out where the game clue came from A Murder is announced. These stories are timeless.

If you are new to Christie, don't start w/this set

This is "bottom of the barrel" Christie to me. I listened to the first 45 minutes of Chimneys 4 times, and could never catch on to the excessively convoluted plot. I continued listening solely to hear Hugh Fraser narrate, and for the familiar cadence of Christie's plots.

As another reviewer mentioned, there is also a very racist comment at the "wrapping up" at the end that truly does carry enough heft to ruin the story. Ugh.

As for A Murder is Announced: great plot; nails-on-a-chalkboard narration.

Loved and liked

I loved The Secret of Chimneys and I liked A Murder is Announced. I think the latter was built up as one of the best Miss Marple’s, but I was rather let down. It was jumbled. Chimneys was very interesting and engaging. I also preferred the first narrator to the second, but only because a few characters were particularly annoying in Announced - to the point that I was hoping they’d be the ones killed off.

Miss Marple Great

Always a pleasure to read Agatha Christie's novels but hearing the suspense on audio is even better. Looking forward to listening to more of her books.

Hugh Fraser is excellent, but Emilia Fox not so much

I enjoyed hearing both of these stories of Agatha Christie’s very much. Hugh Fraser Does a fantastic job reading the story and his voice is lovely and sonorous. It’s also quite nice to imagine him as Hastings in the Poirot television adaptations. However, while Emilia Fox’s narration is perfectly fine, the voices she gives to the characters is grating at times. Not only in terms of tone, but the inflection and interpretation is rather flat. I particularly take issue with Bunch’s portrayal, who, rather than being jolly and playful, is portrayed as silly and rather nasal. Oof!

Typical Christie

A typical Agatha Christie book. As always way too many characters, everyone is a suspect, facts that are completely not knowable but in the end it’s all very entertaining. And of course Ms. Marple is way too clever but still we love her. I still enjoyed the audible book largely because the narration was so good.

Wonderful narration with great acting and variety of voices. Cannot recommend it more highly. All should enjoy.
