The largest brain that has ever existed on Earth belongs to a sperm whale. It is about six times heavier than a human brain, and it spends its life a kilometer down, in total darkness, talking.
Sperm whales trade rapid patterns of clicks for hours. Scientists armed with artificial intelligence have found a hidden alphabet of rhythm and tempo inside them, far more complex than anyone imagined. They still cannot translate a single message.
The loudest sound made by any animal on Earth is one of those clicks. A diver nearby can feel it shake his chest.
Dolphins answer to their own names and recognize a companion’s whistle after decades apart.
A killer whale mother carried her dead newborn across the ocean for weeks and refused to let it sink.
Only humans and a handful of toothed whales go through menopause. Orca grandmothers lead their families to food when the salmon run out. When a grandmother dies, her grandchildren’s risk of death jumps.
Whales have culture. Sperm whale clans speak dialects their neighbors do not share. Humpback songs sweep across an entire ocean like a hit record.
Then comes the darkest twist. The streets of London were once lit with oil taken from the very organ sperm whales use to talk. Whalers killed the biggest animals first, and the biggest were often the oldest. In families where knowledge lives only in memory, every harpoon may have burned a library.
The whales were talking all along. Humans were too busy hunting them to listen.
