With its focus on reasoning, "The Mystery of Marie Roget" sounds like an essay rather than short story. So, characters fall flat at times. Kary Shale saves the day here. Shale won Reader of the Year for his performance of Life of Pi and an Audie Award for Slumdog Millionaire. A personable tenor, Shale handles French easily. In his clear diction and deliberate pacing, Shale's experience shows. Orchestral music sets the tone and period of the piece.
