あらすじ・解説

'Telling my story of first surviving genocide and then as a captive of ISIS is not easy, but people must know.'

The remarkable and courageous story of Nadia Murad, a 23-year-old Yazidi woman who is working with Amal Clooney to challenge the world to fight ISIS on behalf on her people. With a foreword by Amal Clooney.

A Nobel Peace Prize nominee, the first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking of the United Nations and winner of the Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize, Nadia Murad is a courageous young woman who has endured unimaginable tragedy (losing 18 members of her family) and degradation through sexual enslavement to ISIS. But she has fought back.

This inspiring memoir takes us from her peaceful childhood in a remote village in Iraq through loss and brutality to safety in Germany. Courage and testimony can change the world: this is one of those books.

Touching story but narration was distracting

It’s A very touching story but
Sometimes narrators voice was a bit too dramatic, which distracted from the story. This could be the case when its better to
Read the book than to listen to it.

Everyone should read this book

Let me preface this by saying that this isn't an easy book to read. Nobody wants to read about a girl seeing her mother and brothers being beheaded. Nobody wants to know about what it's like to be forced to pray and put make up on in preparation for your own rape. Nobody wants to hear about this, which is why everybody should.

Because Nadia's story isn't fiction. Nadia is a real person who suffered the worst autrocities one human being is capable of afflicting to another, yet she is not a victim. She is a fighter, a survivor, an activist, a strong woman who did not allow herself to become a victim. Even in the darkest of times, she calwed her way out of captivity, only to rebuild herslef from the ashes.

This is a story you should know, because if Nadya went through all she went through, if Nadia's people are suffering this genocide on daily basis, the very least we could do is take the time to read their stories.

And also because this is our duty as humans. To know and to be aware of what is happening to others. It's easy to turn our heads the other way because we don't want to acknowledge the gruesome reality that is some people's lives. We commemorate the abolition of slavery, we promise ourselves to never forget what happened to millions of people in the concentration camps, yet we allow the mass enslavement and genocide of Yazidi people. This is happening today. We need to know. We need to be aware. We need to fight this evil.

Finally, this book is worth a read because it is a triumphant story. It will make you realise that if Nadia can go through what she went through, and come out the other end stronger, more empowered and resiliant then we could too. This story also offers an insight look into the rich, colourful and tight-knigt Yazidi culture, which I for one, was not aware of.

So if you're looking for a new read, something that for better or for worse will change you forver, then pick up Nadia's book. You owe it to yourself, you owe it to Nadia, you owe it to humanity.

Heartbreaking

I could not stop listening, what an inspiration this young woman is to humankind. I cannot begin to imagine how awful her world must have been and how she has overcome this to fight for human rights.

you have not heard a step like this before

well read. great performance but I think most importantly is how it tells of struggle for survival and also encountering humanity at its worst. loved this book, at first I was apprehensive because I thought it would be too heavy but there is a good balance between the history or iraq, politics & religion and the story of Nadia.

Was the world asleep when this happened?

I sobbed through most of this account of genocide against the Yazidi people. I would just like to know where the world leaders were and if they were asleep when this happened? How on earth did this take place in 2014? There is no excuse for any kind of genocide against minorities in the 21st century. Have they ever heard of Allport's scale of discrimination and genocide obviously not. Every single perpetrator of these crimes and those that supported them should be brought to Justice and I also pray for the Yazidi people of the world and that their culture and religion will flourish I'll be kept alive for many many centuries to come. Nadia Murad is an amazing superhero and a warrior Queen I have an amazing amount of respect for her.

tragic story

In a way it does not feel right to review this book. The story is tragic and one could only wish things described in this account will never happen again.

story of the oppressed

The book gives good insight into atrocities done by ISIS. It also shows a life and a mindset of simple life Yazidi people. The mindset of ignorance (the emerging presence of enemy in the region) and helplessness (blaming other parties for not being helped).

absolutely captivating

Nothing beats true stories, especially when they are so horrific and distressing. as painful as it is listen to, this story reflects the resilience and strength of the human spirit. there is always hope and light at the end of the tunnel.

Shocking, sad, terrifying

The story of Nadia is unbelievably sad. The reason I gave only 3 points for performances was the narrators way of reading - which is probably more suitable for exiting children books. At times it made the horrific experiences from Nadia and her fellow sufferers sound unrealistic.

A genuine story from a brave girl

This is a touching story of the Yazidis of Iraq, my homeland.
It is a must read for all Iraqis, Muslims and people around the globe as a proof on how religion is poisonous and should be left as a personal choice not a living ideology.

Story of great courage superbly read

This was such an incredible story of survival in the face of terrible evil. I felt the narrator was excellent and this increased the impact of Nadias escape from ISIS and the horrors they inflicted on the Yazidis. Having listened to this audiobook i now feel so much empathy for this people and their culture. Highly recommended.
