Hodgson's background at sea lends authenticity to the shipboard life on the Mortzestus which is a great contrast to the supernatural aspects of The Ghost Pirates. The growing fear among the men is slow, palpable, and menacing. The crew are menaced by something that few of them can see and the dark nights on the ocean become alarming. Hodgson is really in his element when he writes stories that take place aboard a ship.
