After a devastating car accident leaves former Boston neurosurgeon Lucas with permanent damage to his right hand, he travels to Florence carrying the grief of losing both his career and the identity he built around it. Wandering through the Oltrarno district, he discovers Maya’s art-restoration studio and becomes fascinated by the patience and precision with which she brings damaged paintings back to life.

Maya offers Lucas work as her assistant, encouraging him to rely on his left hand and teaching him that healing does not require restoring something to its original, untouched state. Through months of painstaking restoration, Lucas gradually accepts his limitations and learns to see damage as part of an object’s history rather than proof of failure. When he accidentally breaks a fragile porcelain medallion, Maya introduces him to Kintsugi—the practice of highlighting fractures with gold instead of hiding them—giving Lucas a new way to understand his own scars.

By the end of his year in Florence, Lucas realizes that losing the ability to operate did not take away his ability to heal. Inspired by what he has learned in Maya’s studio, he chooses a new path in neuro-regeneration research, where he can use his medical knowledge to study the slow repair of damaged nerves. His time in Florence transforms his understanding of healing, identity, patience, and the value of surviving with visible scars.
