あらすじ・解説

The Fields of Death is the epic final novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Wellington and Napoleon Quartet. Essential listening for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

1809. Viscount Wellington and Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte have made their mark as military commanders. Lifelong enemies, they both believe their armies are strong enough to destroy any rival. But in war victory can never be certain.

While Wellington's success continues in Spain, Napoleon feels the sting of failure. Yet despite a disastrous Russian campaign and humiliating defeat at Leipzig, he persists in fighting on.

With Napoleon's power waning, the newly titled Duke of Wellington is perfectly placed to crush the tyrant. But his enemy refuses to surrender, and so the two giants must face a final reckoning on the bloody battlefield of Waterloo....

Outstanding

This is the fourth and final book of Scarrow’s Revolution Quartet. This book follows Napoleon’s battles with Austria and Russia and Wellington’s peninsular campaigns to the Battle of Waterloo. Scarrow is a master at writing historical fiction. He is such an easy writer to read as the prose flows so beautifully. His depictions of scenes and battles are historically accurate and hold my attention. I found these four books fascinating. I have been obsessed with this period in history since I was a child. Needless to say, I have read everything I can about the Napoleonic period. These four books cover so much detail they would be great to read many times.

The book is well written and researched. Scarrow does an excellent job of placing the reader into the time frame of the story. Most of the story is historically accurate except for one item. Scarrow has taken his creative prerogative and has Napoleon and Wellington meeting a day or so after the Battle of Waterloo. That meeting never took place.

I used my iPad to google maps and battle maps of the various battles in the book. That made it easier to follow the story. The book is fairly long at twenty-three and a half hours. Jonathan Keeble does an excellent job narrating the book. Keeble narrated all four books. I have listened to him narrate many books over the years. He has a comfortable voice to listen to.

Great historical fiction

Great series on two of the most significant players on the world stage in the early 19th century. Skilled narration too.

Enjoyable

I thought it was a good read. All the books in the series were well read by the narrator. They faithfully followed the life and times of the the two protagonists.

Through all the campaigns in India, Spain and Waterloo I kept wondering if Richard Sharp would get a mention. Not that I really expected him to. But then who was the Rifles major who handed over the French documents at Vitoria? After all his name was Richard!

Nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed the series. Like all Simon Scarrow books well researched written and narrated in the Audible version.

Expectations Exceeded

A wonderful end to the quartet. There's a cherry on top, or rather, an Easter egg. I won't tell you what it is, but if you've read other novels regarding the Peninular War and Waterloo, you'll know to what I'm referring.

I'm also a fan of Jonathan Keeble's style as narrator. He brings depth and richness to all his characters.

Excellent ending to a great Series!!

Simon Scarrow is to be applauded for an excellent piece of Historical Fiction...a real tour de force!! Except for the "Fictional" meeting of Wellington and Napoleon at the conclusion of Waterloo, "Fields" was a completely believable piece of literary genius!

An incomplete ending

I loved this series, however, it concludes with Napoleon's exile. it could have gone much further through the deaths of both of these giants of history.

Keeble rocks!

I very much enjoyed this series of books. They were very informative and for someone who was not very knowledgeable regarding Napoleon and Wellington they did a great job of educating me. Most of all I appreciate the narrator. Keeble never fails to bring his characters to life. Very well done!

Well written and read

This is fantastic and there is nothing like the books in this series. It is perfection to the highest degree. "You actually feel like you are standing in the room with the characters." I listened to all of them and I can't wait to do it again.

Well written, fantastically read

Great end to a great series.
It's a well written book with good pacing that makes it hard to put down.
The narration is easily the best I've listened to on audable, absolutely faultless,.
A subtle cameo from a certain major of the 95th bumped my review from a 4to a 5*

A truly fitting take on history

I first brought the novels in this series has they were published and read them avidly. Simon Scarrow tells a extraordinary story of the lifes of two of the worlds greatest commanders. Pretty much all of the events actually occurred but Scarrow has used these events plus a few imagined ones to breathe new life into an already epic story. All the battle scenes are very well researched and the detail in expertly written. The story in all the books flows really well as Scarrow picks the important events or turns or fate through Napoleon and Wellesley's life that plausible steered them to the inevitable conclusion at Waterloo. As a historic novel there is poetic licence of cause, but this only enhances the story. The whole series is as good as anything written by Bernard Cornwell, in fact look out for a 'tip of the hat' to Cornwell during fields of death, when a certain Major of the 95th rifles makes a very brief cameo!
Narration is superb as ever by J. Keeble, it takes a while not to think of Wellesley as Cato and nearly every sergeant is Macro, but I think that doesn't detract at all from the storytelling, Keeble seems to live the story as he tells it.
My only criticism of the audio books is that the producers don't include the historical notes at the end of each book, they are important in filling some gaps and completing the story.

History brought to Life

I really enjoyed this 4 book series . The reading was very good too. I knew of the Duke of Wellington but this account of his life really brought him to life for me.
Also I enjoyed the concept of telling their stories in parallel. Really good book and nice listening experience.

Outstanding

Listened to this in one 23 hour sitting. Absolutely loved it. And this was my third sitting. Having acute insomnia helps. But it is absolutely first class book with the wholly finest narrator. Scarrow and Keeble. What a team. Brilliant, wonderful, masterful. Also did this with the first three books in this series. Get it, clear your diary for 24 hours and Ace It! You will not be sorry.

Stunning!

Incredible. The only way in which I could have enjoyed the recordings of Simon Scarrow's four books "The Wellington and Napoleon Quartet". Covering 1795 to 1815 any more would be if knew nothing of the characters and events covered. As it is I did and it in no way detracted from pleasure of listening to the authors dramatisation of the historical facts and the theater of the mind constructed by Jonathan Keeble's narration is second to none.
PLEASE do not listen to this book..... Until you have listened to the first titled "The Generals" which is the first of the quartet or you will miss the evolution of the two main characters from their early childhood through to the climax in this, the last of the four books.
I have a feeling that I will listen to this quartet of books again somewhere further down the road

The fourth book completed the saga brilliantly. not concentrating too much on Waterloo which would have been easy to do. beautifully written and well read.

not too bad

gave the story a 4 star because for some stupid reason I was hoping Sharpe would make an appearance, yes, a Richard was mentioned, but he was a Major. But I still enjoyed the story even though I knew how it would end.

tedious but i couldn't stop

i listened to all 4 books within a few weeks and all i can say is thank the goddess that Jonathon Keeble wss brilliant as narrator otherwise i wouldn't have bothered.
it was a long and drawn out series....it had me bored to tears...but i just couldn't stop listening.
i came to 4 conclusions by the end...Napoleon was an brilliant arsehole....Arthur was a prick for marrying Kitty...Kitty was stupid for wasting her life waiting for Arthur...and I'm in love with Arthur 😏
