‘Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never even heard of, and I fail to see—because I do not happen to be a ‘Somebody’—why my diary should not be interesting. My only regret is that I did not commence it when I was a youth.’

A hilarious parody of middle-class self-importance, The Diary of a Nobody is a classic work of comic fiction that has been adapted for both the stage and screen.

Charles Pooter is a man of many hats: devoted husband, proud homeowner, busy clerk – and utterly pompous individual. In this comic masterpiece, we are privy to Pooter’s small triumphs and daily indignities, from awkward dinner parties and disastrous DIY projects to a wayward son with expensive tastes, all while he chases a respect from his peers that never quite arrives... Told with such warmth and accuracy that Pooter has become one of comedy's most beloved creations, this deliciously funny satire of Victorian pretension has lost none of its bite. A timeless portrait of ordinary life, brilliantly observed, A Diary of a Nobody continues to entertain readers to this day.

George Grossmith (1847 – 1912) was an English comedian, writer and composer. With a career spanning over four decades, Grossmith penned several comic operas – collaborating with the likes of Gilbert and Sullivan – musical sketches, books and essays. He was a hugely popular performer during the 1890s, with many of his comic songs still surviving today.

Weedon Grossmith (1854 – 1919) was an English actor, artist and writer. A successful stage performer, Grossmith was celebrated for his comedy roles which often consisted of characters who had a scheming, cowardly nature. He wrote several plays during his career, as well as a comic novel in conjunction with his brother, George Grossmith.
