Laverne Weber’s husband has passed away, she’s lost her home and been forced to move into the city, and her little daughter Birdie is the only family she has left. With her meager savings quickly running out, she’s forced to become a Mail Order Bride. She’s matched to Doc Clinton Martin, in Culver’s Creek, Missouri. From his letters, he’s kind, gentle, honorable, and loving.
But when Laverne arrives, she’s greeted with yet more tragedy: Doc Martin has succumbed to illness, leaving his brother, Andrew, and his mother, Martha, to look after Laverne and Birdie. Andrew is kind enough, but he has his own tragic past. Despite the undeniable spark between him and Laverne, he’s determined to never allow himself to love again.
Starting over is always difficult, but with tragedy chasing Laverne across America, she wonders whether she’ll ever find happiness–or love–again.
