あらすじ・解説

Avoiding the truth does not change the truth.

When Fitzwilliam Darcy meets Miss Elizabeth Bennet, his heart is almost immediately engaged. Seeing the pretty lady before him, a lady of no consequence or fortune, he believes he should not form an attachment to her, unsuitable as such a woman is to be his wife.

What he cannot see, however, is the truth. That the simple country girl harbors a secret. Before she meets Darcy, Elizabeth has spent two years hiding from the men who killed her beloved first husband. Feeling herself destroyed by love, Elizabeth is certain she will never love again, certainly not the arrogant man who has offended her from the first moment of their acquaintance.

In time, Elizabeth surprises herself by finding in Darcy a friend. Even greater is her surprise to find herself gradually coming to love him and  even accepting an offer of marriage from him. As the newly married couple is beginning to settle into their happily ever after, a condemned man on his way to the gallows divulges a shattering truth - a secret that contradicts everything Elizabeth thought she knew about the tragic circumstances of her first marriage.

Against the advice of everyone who loves her - including Darcy - Elizabeth begins to seek the truth, knowing she must have it even if it may destroy her newfound happiness with Darcy.

Really loved some aspects of this book.

Made me laugh, made me blush. (For the record, this may not be the best book to listen to while ferrying the kids about in the car.) In the end, I had to change it for something more prudish.

Very Good Story. Shaky Narration.

I really liked this one. I like the premise. This one is an "Elizabeth as a social equal" variation, and it's particularly well thought out. In this story, Elizabeth is not only an equal, but is arguably superior to Darcy in rank and consequence. Her elevation in rank is the consequence of her being the widow of an earl when the story begins. Elizabeth's husband was killed in a dastardly plot full of political intrigue and familial greed, and a mystery surrounding his murder provides the conflict and angst in the second half of the plot.

The whole thing is well-written and original. A good editor could've removed several superfluous chapters that drag out the angst long beyond any suspense on the part of the reader, but the biggest complaint I had was the narrator. I've heard Ms. Rose narrate other books and enjoyed her performance, but this one was a struggle. She mispronounces SO MANY words and she does it so frequently that you can't escape from its distraction. She also reads the entire book, which is not a short one, VERY slowly and very haltingly. Worse, the performance often stops abruptly in the middle of sentences. This happens throughout the story, and the pauses are occasionally so long or so awkwardly placed that it changes the meaning of what was written.

Aside from the issues with the narration, it's worth getting for the story. Bump the speed up a little. It helps.

Great story! Audio was Just Ok

I loved the book and it even brought me to tears. I give the story 5 Stars. I did not care for the Audiobook as much. Didn’t care for the Darcy voice or the pace but did like the voices for Elizabeth and other ladies. If I like a book I’ll get the audio and I did finish this one but did have to speed it up to 1.5x to listen.

Great story but mediocre narrator

I read this story while it was being written on a Jane Austen fanfic website. I am a great fan of the author and loved the story. As with other favorite JAFF stories I really like, I purchased the audiobook so I could listen to it in the car or in bed at night and enjoy it again.

The story is very good. Unique for JAFF with great twists played against canon. But....the narrator really bothered me. Her pronunciation of words was off-putting, and she pronounced Georgiana Darcy's name differently back and forth through the story. I especially didn't like the voice she used for Darcy. It was too posh and effeminate. Mr. Darcy is first and foremost a man who is solid and straightforward. Giving him that slight accent really took away from the story for me. I will not purchase another book narrated by this narrator, but if you want a well written P&P story, Ms. D'Orazio is a really good writer.

Best Pride & Prejudice Variation EVER

10 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!
I think I’ve read every variation possible from the humblest of Pride and Prejudice Variation’s, to a Vampire version, to a modern presidential take, to a few saucy adult version, to many many repeat versions that have very little variation at all and mostly help me sleep. This has been by far the best variation with a wonderful yet tragic romantic addition yet still focusing on our love for Elizabeth and Darcy ! A+++

Great overall but a little drawn out

I liked the book well written but at times a little drawn out with too many repetitive angst scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth. I would have liked to seen less of them and more interaction with the Bennett family, Georgianna, and the Bingleys as they were almost nonexistent. Too dramatic at times. Great story line but too many serious scenes. I liked the narrator as she had a lot to read 17 + hours, and did a great job. Her various voices were fine as she had so many characters to portray she did them well. Overall I enjoyed the book and the authors talent.

Just saying wow

What a story. Such intrigues. Such love. And heartbreak. It was good to know that it would end in a HEA for ODC. So well written and the narrator did a great job. I highly recommend this book to a Jane Austen fan fiction lover.

Much more than I expected

I’ve fairly recently discovered JAFF ( yeah, where have a I been? ) and have since been on a P&P binge. I’ve reviewed a few others that were wonderful retellings with a twist, but this one took me by surprise. At first, it was so against canon, I almost felt like these were two different people, completely, with the names of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. She is a widow with a small child, which he doesn’t know when they meet. But, I soon found that this was just a new twist as we soon go to Longbourne and Netherfield. There, we meet the Ms. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy we know. But, they have deeper dimensions and the author leads us down another road leading to murder, mystery, love, longing, despair and hope.

There are some very tastefully done intimacy scenes, not graphic, just heavily hinted at with kissing and “petting” somewhere between PG and PG13.

There was never a more dastardly Wickham and we have villains much more dangerous than Lady Catherine could ever imagine. There is a brief discussion of an execution that was fairly graphic. Definitely not your everyday P&P, but it takes you on a great ride down a familiar road. The epilogue was wonderful.

The narrator was okay, providing distinct voices and believable voice changes when the characters talk through tears. The only negative is the pacing. It was very halting, like listening to a bad imitation of a Captain Kirk impersonation, or like she was trying too hard to give clipped aristocratic tones. “Her ring...was from his mother”, “and it fit...as if it was made for her”. She also had a problem with some pronunciations of common words; Michaelmus instead of Mickelmas, abalutions instead of ablution, disrepeutable instead of disreputable. I’ve definitely heard worse so others may not mind. Sample first.

The story is worth it if you don’t mind the reading too much.

Exhilarating

This is without a doubt one of the best Pride and Prejudice variations I’ve ever listened to. I could not put it down. Well done

very different

enjoyed the plot and writing style of life author.
narration was fine, mens voices were a wee bit creepy at times in their tone but didn't spoil my enjoyment. I'll listen to it again quite happily.

Good Story, Awful Narration

I dare say this book would have been more enjoyable if the narration wasn’t so bad. The narrator spoke too slow and added strange pauses into her speech that made it sound like she had stop talking mid sentence to breathe. I had to speed up the audio to make it sound a little more normal. I also didn’t like how she voiced Elizabeth with a haughty posh voice. That is not how down-to-earth Lizzy would sound, even as a countess.

The story itself was good, but a little lengthy. Lots of twists, turns and angst. Luckily it all worked out in the end for ODC.

I would recommend Ms D’Orazio gets this book narrated anew by someone trusty such as Elizabeth Klett or Stevie Zimmermann. It would certainly improve the scoring on Audible.
