論語をみると、われわれば日常遭遇する現象や問題がことごとく原理的に説明されている。こんなことにまで触れていたか、こんな問題まで出ていたかと、驚くばかりである。たとえば、里仁篇に、「利によって行えば怨み多し」とある。これは今日も同じことで、人びとは皆、「利」を追って暮らしているが、利を求めてかえって利を失い、利によって誤まられて、際限もなく怨みを作っている。それは「利とは何であるか」ということを知らないからである。「利の本は義」「利は義の和なり」（左伝）という。したがって本当に利を得ようとすれば「いかにすることが“義”か」という根本に立ち返らなければならない。これは千古かわらぬ事実であり、法則である。ここに気がついて初めて論語が〈活きた学問〉となる。（まえがきより）
