あらすじ・解説

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Algebra of Happiness, by Scott Galloway.

From the New York Times best-selling author, a provocative book of hard-won wisdom for achieving a fulfilling career and life.

  • How can you have a meaningful career, not just a lucrative one?
  • Is a work/life balance really possible?
  • What does it take to make a long-term relationship succeed?
  • What can you do now so there are no regrets aged 40, 50 or 80?

As Scott Galloway puts it, by the time you hit your mid-20s sh*t gets real. Life becomes stressful. Even the smart, the hardworking and the elite can feel lost in a chaotic, noisy and unpredictable world.

As a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, the debate in Galloway's MBA class often veers away from business strategy to the challenging issue of life strategies. Which is why Galloway, in his signature take-no-prisoners style, has developed a dynamic formula for a life well lived.

In The Algebra of Happiness Galloway tells you how life can be navigated and negotiated better to maximise happiness and minimise the inevitable stress. Delivering practical advice and hard-won wisdom on everything from when to own property to how hard to work, this is self-help for anyone struggling with life's big questions.

Through simple equations that measure the relationship between success, resilience and failure or the correlation between happiness and money, Galloway attempts to convert intangible advice to tangible equations.

Brilliant as Prescribed

The book is an extension of the charismatic insightful clairvoyant Scott Galloway that we have come to respect and love. Brilliant book on maintaining once yet pausing to reflect and appreciate the backward algebra of happiness. #MustHear

Pieces of all good things!!

It's long but full of short good messages all over. You can listen to separate sections as they're not interdependent per se. You can give it a try!!

A little book of wisdom

I discovered Professor Scott Galloway via his Podcast (Pivot) and think he's brilliant - insightful, witty and wise. His first book, 'The Four', about Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook is incredible. A revelation of the real business and business practices of big tech that is sure to make the scales fall from your eyes. However, I was a bit suspicious of this book. The title really irked me. Silicon Valley already seems obsessed with both algorithms and tantric self-gratification and I feared that this book was some new coda for that. I dunno maybe the title is meant to be ironic. Anyway, what you get is a short (and easily digestible) book of universal life-lessons and the personal experiences that brought such wisdom. It's a book of lessons from the old to the young. I'm not particularly young or inexperienced, but I took heart and learnings from it nonetheless. The only thing is Galloway is 54. I hope he's not dying, cos I think he's great.

a great personal take on what brings happiness

Galloway is very clear that this is his guide to happiness without qualifications, but that doesn't stop it from being informative, analytical, interesting and above all helpful. great that Galloway narrates too.

USA is a strange set up

Shocked by one huge contradiction in Scottj's thinking. He paints the harrowing scene where his Mum is struck by cancer and her treatment options are few because she/he wasn't loaded at the time or had no Doctor friends. Then at other points refers to the luck of being born in the best postcode in the world the USA. The USA seems like a great place to become a billionaire but in the best postcodes in the world secretaries can receive the same health care as billionaires.

Enjoyable but not everyone will relate

Scott is a fantastic narrator. I've learned a few good things and made note of a couple of mantras that made sense to me. There's a lot about kids, family and caring for others that I cannot fully relate to, but still worth the time to learn from his experience. Scott made a good impression on me so I'm off to check out his other work :)

Beautifully honest, moving and impactful

Just pure, raw and beautiful. Produced a paradigm shift for me. One of my top 10 books of all time, for the impact it had on my thoughts.

Galloway breaks life down. And back up again...

If you’re familiar with Scott’s work on Pivot or The Prof G show you’re likely aware of his intellect and knowledge base. It’s also true that he occasionally draws on this book for some of the analogies and story telling on his podcasts. But what this book delivers is the underlying heart, vulnerability and raw masculine emotion that for Scott is forever present, but sometimes obscured in the shorter form formats. Well done Scotty, it’s a very, very good book.

Scott never disappoints

A candid mini-biopic from a 50+ year old dude that has seen much, weighed his choices and reflects on where he went wrong. Even though it's a book for sale, it feels mildly altruistic, like he actually gives a s*it about the reader and wants you to take his life's lessons on board.

Thought provoking and emotional.

As a father of three now grown young adults I found Scott’s book thought-provoking and incredibly emotional. I think the book read by the author is a reflection on a side of humanity that all of us can lose touch with when we focus primarily on our own needs before those we love. Thank you Scott, I will be recommending this book to everyone especially my boys and those I care about.

Life lessons from Scott

Interesting life lessons and reflections from Scott Galloway trying to amend for past indiscretions and pay it forward by sharing his experiences. Great that he reads it himself. If you weren’t familiar with him and his style it wouldn’t resonate as well. Read The Four and listen to him on Pivot first.
