あらすじ・解説

On a hot July morning on Sweden's idyllic vacation island of Sandhamn, a man takes his dog for a walk and makes a gruesome discovery: a body, tangled in fishing net, has washed ashore.

Police detective Thomas Andreasson is the first to arrive on the scene. Before long, he has identified the deceased as Krister Berggren, a bachelor from the mainland who has been missing for months. All signs point to an accident - until another brutalized corpse is found at the local bed-and-breakfast. But this time it is Berggren's cousin, whom Thomas interviewed in Stockholm just days before.

As the island's residents reel from the news, Thomas turns to his childhood friend, local lawyer Nora Linde. Together, they attempt to unravel the riddles left behind by these two mysterious outsiders - while trying to make sense of the difficult twists their own lives have taken since the shared summer days of their youth.

Awful narration

The narrator has a shrill quality to her voice and I find it irritating. I tried slowing down the speed to 75%, which helped lower the pitch of her voice somewhat, but it was too slow in places. I also felt like she was reading too fast for my taste. If I could have slowed it down to 85% and lowered the pitch to take the shrillness out of her voice, I could have made it past the first couple of chapters. As it was, I had to quit listening to it, so I can’t really comment on the content of the story because it was too annoying to listen to.

Awful narration

The story is fine but the narration was very annoying, shrill yet wooden. Will not buy the next in the series as the narrator is the same.

Good story but reader is shrill

I couldn't get past the annoying shrill voice of the reader. Her fast speech and American accent ruined the story for me. It sounds like she's yelling the whole time.

A voice like a jackhammer

This narrator's voice was actually painful for me to listen to. It's too bad--I sail and was looking forward to this story. I bought the e-book, so I'll still read it--but if you are sensitive to voice, skip this narrator.

Bart Simpson Narrates

I love Scandanavian mysteries, so I was very disappointed I could not get past the narration to enjoy this one. I checked later books in the series, and they are narrated by the same person. Very disappointed, but when I want to hear Bart and Lisa, I'll watch them on tv.

Good mystery but bad narration

Loved the writing and the characters. Kept me guessing until the end. Narrator used a series of annoying voices.

Terrible voice quality

The voice is horrible. I wonder if this was auto generated by a computer. Has no life, no emotions or anything at all. Worst ever.

Murder In The Stockholm Archipelago

I enjoyed reading this first book in a translated from the Swedish mystery series. Sten really captured summer life in Stockholm and on Sandhamn Island. Her characters were multi dimensional, the story was layered and the descriptions of the local setting were excellent.

My only problem with the book was the narration. Dawe's reading was so fast and loud that I almost gave up. I tried slowing the speed down to .75--but that made things worse. What worked in the end was decreasing the volume from normal to just on the edged of too low--this took the edge off.

I am looking forward to book 2 in the series. I really like the slice of life from somewhere else that these translated books offer. If you have kindle unlimited the audible narration comes free with the borrowed book. A win/win if you can cope with the narrator.

Dreadful Narration. Truly Horrible !

Could not listen to more than 5 minutes of book. What made the editor think a Swedish accent sounds like a shrill nasal squawk in a harsh American female accent ?!
What is wrong with you people ? There a so many nationalities listening to Audible who are wanting authentic Narration and that includes Americans. WHO WANTS TO LISTEN TO A SHRIEKING FISHWIFE READ THEM A BOOK ? ? If you cant afford a soft Swedish accented narrator employ a gentle spoken Englishman. Don't inflict this garbage on us.
I've listened to hundreds and hundreds of Audible books, am starting to think there is no over site making sure of narration quality in the place. I want my money back.

A solid mystery by a writer who is new to me

A body washes up on the beach of the island of Sandhamn, in Sweden, and at first it looks like an accident. It takes a while to identify him, but Krister Berggren seemingly just had an accidental fall off a boat, and wasn't noticed in time. Police Detective Thomas Andreasson identifies him, and talks to Krister's only close relative, his cousin Kicki Berggren, in Stockholm, and is about to close the case when Kicki turns up dead, apparently badly beaten, in a bed-and-breakfast on Sandhamn.

Circumstances make this effectively the first major murder investigation that Thomas has led, and his local knowledge of Sandhamn, where he spent many a childhood summer, and his friendship with local lawyer Nora Linde give him some badly needed advantages in a very puzzling case.

Sten is a Swedish writer, and I discovered her books while mucking around with my new-to-me Kindle fire. I'm glad I did. It's a really good, solid mystery by someone i wouldn't ordinarily be seeking out. Thomas and his colleagues, and Nora and her friends and neighbors, are well worth getting to know, and the story is solidly plotted. It's worth noting that Sten didn't feel compelled to make Nora and Thomas a romantic couple. They each have their own romantic and relationship issues, but their relationship with each other is just longstanding, solid, reliable friendship.

Since I'm not Swedish, have never been to Sweden, and am overall unlikely to go to Sweden, this book also gave me a bit of an out-of-culture experience, and that's always enjoyable, an added benefit to the good mystery and good characters.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.

A good listen.

I enjoyed listening to this book. The setting on the island of Sandhamn is beautifully described and sounds tranquil, but it's not long before a body is washed up on the shore and in step the police detectives from Stockholm.
I liked getting to know the characters and their back stories. Hopefully more to follow.
The story is a little predictable but flows well and keeps you interested - it's definitely worth a listen. It would be good to hear more from this author to see how the characters and their relationships develop.

Narration ruins the Audible version, Read the Kindle version

Abandoned after 30 minutes. I couldn’t cope with the narration. One of the other reviewers has put it really well when he said that the narrator‘s voice was too harsh, too American and all of the Swedish subtlety has been lost.

Did not enjoy the narration.

I am afraid that the very obvious American accent and rather hard tone of the narrator meant that the Scandinavian flavour of the story was lost.

"Thomas said"

Good but some annoyances such as repetition of the word archipelago and what sounded like cut and pasted "Thomas said" so many times.
