あらすじ・解説

A woman’s dangerous career comes to a chilling end in this spellbinding thriller by Viveca Sten, bestselling author of In the Heat of the Moment....

The body of world-famous journalist Jeanette Thiels is discovered the day after Christmas, frozen in a snow-covered garden just steps from her hotel on Sandhamn Island. Detective Thomas Andreasson finds it highly unlikely that it was some bizarre accident. After all, the relentless war-zone correspondent was no stranger to conflict and controversy - both professional and, of late, very personal. Who would want to see her dead is another story.

Enlisting the help of attorney Nora Linde, his longtime friend on holiday, Thomas is anxious for the answers. But he and Nora don’t have to look far. The clues are leading them closer to home than they imagined. Jeanette may have made a career out of exposing corruption at the highest levels of world power, but she was also a woman with secrets of her own, and they’re coming to light on Sandhamn. For Thomas and Nora, unearthing the deeply rooted deceptions behind Jeanette’s death could now put those closest to her in harm’s way, too.

Too many Characters

It was my first read by this author and I found that there were too many characters and sub plots lines to follow. Which made for confusion. Maybe because it was the 6th book in the series and didn't know who was who. Not something I would listen to again as it took too many chapters in between to get back to the story line to see what happened. Lot of fuller about other people who really didn't have much to do with the plot. The narrator had a nice voice though. Didn't care for how the police handled the 13 yrs old and left her alone for hours when they took her father in for questioning. Didn't care for the politics either. The author was just not for me, other,s may enjoy her series though

Very entertaining multiple mysteries

I enjoyed the different facets of this book. The multiple families were hard to keep apart, maybe because of the foreign names. I thought the performance was excellent. Having more than one mystery made it more interesting.

Great Swedish series!

Love the books of Viveca Sten. The Swedish scenery is beautifully described and is a fitting background for the mysteries. The stories are very much current with today’s events. Can’t wait for the next book to be translated!

My least favorite in the Sandhamn series

It was the 1st one that I knew who the killer was when the character was introduced. None of Sten's stories have been predictable till this one.
The narration was still very good.
I'm hopeful that the next one will be more enjoyable.

A STORY OF POLICE INCOMPETENCE

The twists and turns in this novel are created by repeated acts of delaying, overlooking the obvious and in general incompetence by the police. and pretty much every character. Thumbs double down!!!

In Harm's Way

Found the narration to be poor.It was clear but character voices lacked believability in gender. Also dramatic substance was missing.

NOT a good book but perfect narration..

It was like every chapter the author was introducing a new character and most of the time I was completely lost and had no idea what THAT person had to do with the death of Jeanette Theils. Even though I did want to know who poisoned her I can’t see me reading anything else by this author, or anything else that’s been translated, because things get “lost in translation.” LOL

Thomas and Margit I could see since they were the police but not all the others that had anything to do with Jeanette and I couldn’t understand why they were even in the book. The only review on Audible says “Too many characters,” and I have to whole-heartedly agree with reviewer Seattle blues, there were too many, 416 pages of too many characters. I found it hard to believe she was going to tie all these people together at the end on the book. Which she didn’t. About 4 people didn’t even have to be in the book:

Nora and Henrik were a divorced couple who spent Christmas together with their sons. She worked for a bank and she thought the bank was doing something shady, and that went on and on. It had nothing to do with Tomas and Margit’s investigation into the murder. There was two stories and the one was pretty boring. In the end Nora decided to quit her job and find another. Really? All those pages to come up with that solution? That was stupid.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 12 times.

As to the narration: Angela Dawe was amazing. There were a whole lot of Swedish words and she never stumbled over the words or gave you the impression she had no idea what she was reading. Her voices were perfect and she read every emotion the book called for. Simply awesome.

Not as good as the previous ones in the series.

The performance was good, but the characters have changed everything but their names. The story was banal and far fetched, with the characters' bias against the "New Sweden" movement without even exploring why it had gained momentum (mass immigration) not even discussed. The "villains" were two dimensional caricatures, and it beggared belief that a police procedural should conveniently ignore such matters as interviewing minors in the absence of a responsible adult, unwarranted breaking, entry, and search, and leaps of faith as to the identity of the prime suspect in the beating up of the policeman who committed the illegal search. That the identity of the people eventually shown to be the miscreants turned out to be at the top of the anti-immigration organisation of which the author so clearly disapproves is just too convenient. The motive for the initial murder, by the way, does not ring true. As I said, this was a major disappointment in comparison with the earlier novels in the series, which were excellent.

Terrific

Must say I think this one is one of the best. Couldn’t put it down. Really loved the section where the policeman was caught. Couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

Love this series

Well written and easy listening. The reading is excellent and does not make it seem this is a translation. The story lines in each episode make this books that are hard to put down.
