あらすじ・解説

2021 Man Booker Award Nominee

A haunting fable of art, family, and fate from the author of the Outline trilogy.

A woman invites a famous artist to use her guesthouse in the remote coastal landscape where she lives with her family. Powerfully drawn to his paintings, she believes his vision might penetrate the mystery at the center of her life. But as a long, dry summer sets in, his provocative presence itself becomes an enigma - and disrupts the calm of her secluded household.

Second Place, Rachel Cusk’s electrifying new novel, is a study of female fate and male privilege, the geometries of human relationships, and the moral questions that animate our lives. It reminds us of art’s capacity to uplift - and to destroy.

Description of child sex abuse

This book opens with a disturbing account of child sexual abuse. I stopped listening when the author was going to describe what happened at a slaughterhouse.

First ten minutes are the best of the whole book

Not sure why I stayed with it to the end. A few provocative sentences (eg Fear is a habit and like all habits it kills what is essential in us.) and the rest was tedious, disconnected, characters unformed and two dimensional, and plot was idiotic. But let me tell you how I really feel…..ha.

Get a new reader!!!!!!!!!!

The reader unfortunately throws her self into her acting and it’s a dreadful distraction from the book itself which is excellent. I hope it gets re-recorded with someone who can suppress her efforts to be dramatic at every turn possible. Her delivery seems to me to be antipathetic to the wonderful and mysterious prosse of Rachel Cusk.

one of the most self aggrandizing books ever, totally meaningless

would not recommend for any reason.. self indulgent characters , mean spirited through & through without any redeeming graces except to go on page after page with drivel.
