批評家のレビュー

"You cannot discuss heavy metal without mentioning Dave Mustaine and Megadeth. I've known these guys since their beginning. We took them on their first national tour. This is one of the bands that sharpened the cutting edge of metal. This book tells the roller coaster story of their iconic album Rust in Peace and delves into their personal struggles to keep it all together while dealing with addiction. This struggle and eventual success is one of the things that make Dave Mustaine and Megadeth as a band so compelling. They went through it all and then some, and they came out the other end of it. It's one of the things we have in common. I am proud to have had a small hand in their sobriety during this period of their career. This book is a must read for metal fans. Herein lies their story - Glory, Destruction and Redemption." (Alice Cooper)

"Rust in Peace is an album that means so much to so many it's worthy of this book solely dedicated to it. And now I can't wait for the movie!" (Scott Ian of Anthrax)

"With a foreword by Guns n' Roses' guitarist Slash, and a who's-who of music industry participants, this rollicking history is a no-brainer for metal fans." (Publisher's Weekly

あらすじ・解説

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Megadeth’s iconic record, Rust in Peace, from the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist.

When Rust in Peace was released in 1990, the future of Megadeth was uncertain. Fresh off their performance at the record-breaking Monsters of Rock festival, and with knockout new albums from Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica dominating the charts, the pressure to produce a standout statement record was higher than ever.

In Rust in Peace: The Inside Story of the Megadeth Masterpiece, the band's lead vocalist and guitarist, Dave Mustaine, gives listeners a never-before-seen glimpse into the artistry and insanity that went into making the band's most iconic record. He recounts the arduous task of hiring the band and supporting cast, of managing egos and extracurriculars during the album's ensuing success, and succumbing to the pressures of fame and fortune - which eventually forced the band to break up.

And yet, Megadeth's demise was just the beginning; the birth pangs of the record were nothing compared to what came next. Alcohol, drugs, sex, money, power, property, prestige, the lies fed to the band by the industry - and the lies they told each other-threatened to eat away at the band's bond like rust, devouring it until only the music survived.

Mustaine definitely exerts his control

some great stories, definitely glad its not all from Dave M's perspective, hearing the same stories from multiple points of view definitely helps to weed out some of the bullshit and ego, and have a better shit at seeing what actually happened. worth the listen, especially if you remember those days leading up to the RIP album, and the years after, or simply want to see the miraculous feat it was that such a perfect record could be made in such utter chaos and disarray.

Truth behind the Greatest Heavy Metal Album Ever

Dave Mustaine allows the truth to be told even though members still Don't agree. The members have truly agreed to disagree and that is ok. It is refreshing to hear this. It is powerful and eye opening on how Mustaine really is, even though you hear lies and BS told about him. You can hear its not true. This was great hearing this from the guys themselves.

Amazing story

Great story to one of the greatest albums ever released. good to hear them talk about the history of that time. Wish Nick was alive to talk about it himself though.

Who the hell is talking?

Good book but very confusing, because you have no clue who's talking. Someone recounts a story and you don't know if it's supposed to be Friedman or a producer or an old bandmate. Before anyone starts talking, they should say who's uttering the words.

Dave is full of bs

Dave’s version of things is always suspect, it’s a good thing other people are there to chime in. He said one of the songs is based on the Van damme movie “time cop”, I’m 99% sure that movie came out like 5 years after RIP.

It's poop

Just Dave M. whining about how most of everything that went wrong is someone else's fault. Story telling and narration also suck.

Part of my history

A really interesting insight to one of my favourite bands. I was at Donnington Monsters of Rock in 1988 and have enjoyed the band ever since. Some tragic events and sad moments, but I enjoyed hearing how the band changed and evolved throughout the years

Great last third.

Too laboured stating how addicted they were but the actual recording of the record but was good in the last third.

not as detailed as I'd wanted

too much focus on the drug taking not as much on the actual recording of the album.

Great insight into the world of metal

Im a big Megadeth fan. Have been since 1990. And even though being a fan I knew some of these events, it was still fascinating to hear how things came about.
Love the way the book leads in from the end of the So Far So Good tour cycle, the getting clean to how the Rust line up came about and the events after. It's a great balance and brings back a lot of memories for me of that period as I lived it as a fan.
Even if you're not a metal or Megadeth fan, the story of recording while getting sober is good enough alone. You could say this is as much a book about getting over addiction as much a book about one of the greatest records of all time.

Not entirely what it claims to be

The first 1h 35m is spent talking about how wasted the band were. While they touch briefly about the recording of the album more time was spent on Mustaine’s pining for his wife, drug taking and attending AA (or the drug equivalent) or his drug support person who he thought was cool cos they’re an ‘ex’-criminal. In classic fashion, everybody else is to blame while this drugged up genius fumbles through the work and others don’t get any credit.
Mustaine biography was a better read...as is Ellefson’s. Ellefson is a great public speaker too, if you get the opportunity to see his spoken word tour/s then you should go.
Pity the classic lineup didn’t get together, also unfortunate that if Marty was making that much cash in Japan and Dave couldn’t afford to pay him so he wasn’t going backwards then the least he could have done was acknowledge that the Megadeth machine can’t afford the services, rather than bad mouth him in the in the book because ‘Megadeth is a behemoth’. A real lack of humility and common sense....but then having read and seen hundreds of interviews, that shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody. Great riff writer...and love that Ellefson is back in the band. I will always like MegDeth and purchase the albums...but mustaine is not good at self promotion (or keeping things in check).
Also, the intro ‘with the mustaine snarl...written by Dave Mustaine’ then proceeds to plays at least 2-2.5 hrs of interviews from other people. Hardly ‘written by’. I recall seeing Dave do something similar about the biography...now I’m a New Yorker times best seller...>insert I’m amazing self kudos’.... hurry up and release some new music...let that do the talking.

Entertaining

A fascinating look at a landmark album. It is candid and sincere. I liked the way each players honest opposing observations, feelings and views are juxtaposed. In particular I gained a profound respect for Junior holding the band together in recording the album, and sad that he didn’t get the credit he deserved.
Very enjoyable and entertaining, but one for the fans.
