あらすじ・解説

Kevin Kwan, best-selling author of Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend, is back with an uproarious new novel of a family riven by fortune, an ex-wife driven psychotic with jealousy, a battle royal fought through couture gown sabotage, and the heir to one of Asia's greatest fortunes locked out of his inheritance.

When Nicholas Young hears that his grandmother, Su Yi, is on her deathbed, he rushes to be by her bedside - but he's not alone. The entire Shang-Young clan has convened from all corners of the globe to stake claim on their matriarch's massive fortune. With each family member vying to inherit Tyersall Park - a trophy estate on 64 prime acres in the heart of Singapore - Nicholas' childhood home turns into a hotbed of speculation and sabotage.

As her relatives fight over heirlooms, Astrid Leong is at the center of her own storm, desperately in love with her old sweetheart, Charlie Wu, but tormented by her ex-husband - a man hell-bent on destroying Astrid's reputation and relationship.

Meanwhile Kitty Pong, married to China's second richest man, billionaire Jack Bing, still feels second best next to her new stepdaughter, famous fashionista Colette Bing.

A sweeping novel that takes us from the elegantly appointed mansions of Manila to the secluded private islands in the Sulu Sea, from a kidnapping at Hong Kong's most elite private school to a surprise marriage proposal at an Indian palace caught on camera by the telephoto lenses of paparazzi, Kevin Kwan's hilarious, gloriously wicked new novel reveals the long-buried secrets of Asia's most privileged families and their rich people problems.

Fantastical life

Would you consider the audio edition of Rich People Problems to be better than the print version?

I always love audio versions but wished the narrator knew correct pronunciation of many foreign terms

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The only extreme reaction to the whole series was sheer disbelief of that degree of wealth - that by the end billions were so meaningless, designer brands so cheapened and family dynasties more important than love or achievement. That said the whole series was so fun - to hear how the elite few live, spend their money, to dream of weeks in Paris while haute couture dresses are made and to salivate over their meals.

Any additional comments?

It really irks me when narrators mispronounce names. She should learn that the George V is not George 5 but George Cinq. And Nessun Dorma tune is not as she screamed.

Not as good as the first

Too much time on less than endearing characters. But vivid and descriptive like the first one.

Couldn't put it down!

I finished this book in a week! the grandmother is petty in a way that I live for! the story doesn't go where you think it will. And the narrator does a great job of distinguishing the many, many characters.

I highly recommend this book!!!

Cheesy and Funny and the PERFECT Summer Book!

I've read all of Kevin Kwan's books, and this one is as equally funny and entertaining as the first two. Of course, they're all kind of silly but entertaining nonetheless. (I see many parallels between the book and my real life as an Asian American woman!) The narrator really brings the story to life.

Kwan does it again!

The next installment in a great story of family, culture, and traditions often unknown to the Western world. Kevin Kwan does a great job of weaving so many individuals' stories into a great tapestry. At times it can be hard to keep up with exactly which character is being discussed but it doesn't take more than a moment or two to catch up. Lydia Look's narration does such justice to the story and her great talent for making subtle shifts in her voice helps listeners follow along on when there are often many characters in one scene. Hope this isn't the end of this family's story, looking forward to the next book from Kevin Kwan for sure!!

Rich Asian Series

I thoroughly enjoyed the story telling of this series of books--funny, light and entertaining summer read. I must say, however, there were many cringeworthy moments when the narrator mispronounced names and words. This is an easy fix with some Google research. This totally bugged me.

great ending

despite the fact that it was supposed to be sad, this book made me laugh a lot and is perhaps the funniest of the trilogy. it is also a great ending to a great story, definitely worth a good read/listen.

A good next chapter in the series

I enjoyed this book, it continued on the sort of Rachel and Nick. However, the dialogue between characters didn’t quite pack the same punch as in the last few books. I would still recommend reading or listening to this.

A Favourite

The second best book of the franchise and I enjoyed the voice work in this book more than the previous books. One niggling issue is that no one bothered to check the pronounciation of Bondi and Coggee - sears in my ears whenever I hear it.

In this final chapter of the “crazy rich Asians” trilogy all the build up ties into one central plot. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone thinking about it.

Good story, easy listening

Good story and a nice easy listen. Narrator did good job of distinguishing characters but she mispronounced several words though which was very disappointing and did impact the story. Also the narrator could have skipped some of the footnotes as they pulled the listener from the story. Editing obviously wasn’t well done.

What a grand finale!

I have enjoyed every book on this trilogy. I have learnt so much and I have come to realise that great stories live in us all. Kevin Kwan is a master of artistic writing. I love the way he ties all the stories into one marvelous yarn. My heart said yes as I reached the end of this book. Tyersall Park made it. Now I can watch the movie. I hope there are more movies to showcase this tome of a trilogy. What a grand finale!

A lovely way to round out the trilogy

Great book. I was listening on the bus when a particular character passed away and wept hysterically in public! Love the trilogy overall. Crazy story lines that have kept me entertained for weeks. Voice of Rachel was great in book 1 but annoying in the next two books. And some of the pronunciations in this book were appalling, particularly the Australian place names (Bondi and Coogee).

Best of the three

I’ve listened to all three in the series and I feel this one is the best. Better performance than the first book with no annoying accent and more exciting storyline than the second book which got a bit flat in the middle. A very delightful and entertaining series overall

Good story, but the narrator...

This was my least favourite of the three books, but it was still good. I really don’t like the narrator though. She sounds so fake smiley half the time, and sometimes she’ll leave weirdly long pauses between words. She annoyed me.

Great story, HORRIBLE NARRATOR

I love the Crazy Rich Asian trilogy and commend Kevin Kwan for writing a pretty on point story about the culture of asians. Doesn’t matter if you’re part of the 1% or the general population, family heritage still matters and the snobby way older generation judge their children’s partners by the impressiveness of their blood lines, wealth, property, and gross annual income is still true. What I CANNOT STAND is the narrator’s horrible reading. She makes Rachel sound like an idiot, Elenor cheap and Astrid cheap. All the other asians who weren’t declared to have english accents (with the exception of Nick) have chinese or indian accents and has mispronounced so many places and last names in this story and it infuriates me. Filipinos from forbes park have the most perfect american ENGLISH ACCENT. And the YOUNG descendants should have british or singlish accents all of which DID NOT HAPPEN for this book. Horrible! Just HORRIBLE. And so badly read. No research was made on this narrator’s part and would benefit A SHI* LOAD from a few lessons with stephen fry, Natalie dormer, or jim bean! Disappointed as story sounded cheap. Didn’t sound like a story about asia’s 1% but More of a bunch of bored housewives. Id give the performance 0 stars if it were possible. But I cannot.
