あらすじ・解説

The apex of the martial arts calls out. It challenges all to ascend.

Long Chao is the son of a hedge mage — a heretic cultivator. He doesn’t cultivate for power, but to satisfy his endless curiosity.

One fateful day, Xiao Huifen, a girl aiming to be the youngest Sky Realm cultivator in the Monolith continent’s history, crashes into his life. She’s from the world of top-ranked sects and strict cultivation methodologies. They share nothing in common except for the unquenchable desire to unlock heaven’s every mystery.

This is their journey.

However, the brightest glory casts the darkest shadow. Strength begets brutality. Long-life begets the foulest perversions. To those who dwell in the darkness, young cultivators such as them are nothing more than some of the finest resources. To use them as slaves. Refine them into pills.

When faced with such depravity, this unorthodox pair must do all they can to survive. Even if they do, how can they hope to remain unchanged?

This is a coming-of-age story that follows two paths to power. For one, it's long and arduous. Despite his unique insights, Long Chao must always strive to keep up with those around him. For the other, strength comes easy. Xiao Huifen isn't competing against her peers, but the vague legends of Divine cultivators.

Rapey Romance?

This book is absolutely awful in every aspect some in a previous review someone said it was like Cradle.. it is nothing like Cradle except it is a Wuxia… Completely waste of credit and time.

I kept hoping it would get better and guess what it never did..

lazy writing, weird narration order and simp MC

it was interesting and then got weird.

it started out well but basically turned into sex cultivation. I didn't finish the book after that. it isn't something I look for in a cultivation novel. Also it's a bit too much enfatuation between characters. I do like the law concepts. Just can't sit through that much romance.

Narration switch is something you get used to.

To put it lightly, I got this audiobook for three main reasons.
1) The length.
2) I enjoy cultivation books.
3) The over all high score it has.

However, I can honestly say I somehow missed sleeping to actually listen to this book in almost it's entirety for the full length.

If this were a book I had had to read, it would have been a literal page turner. Once I started listening, I couldn't stop myself from wanting more. which now leaves me in the sour state of wanting the next book, like so many other books I've listened to.

I won't give a brief overview as you can read that in the books description, instead I will give it a resounding yes. This is well worth the credit, or money, whichever you do, if you enjoy cultivation novels.

Suspend your disbelief, and fall into the narrative spun by both readers, and you will only slightly notice the fact that it changes from one to another and only when the main focus of the plot at the time is either male or female, no mid sentence switching.

If you are able to get over narration switching and suspension of disbelief, you will enjoy this.

The awesome adventures of...

This book on second listening feels a lot like a series of anthologies that all add up to a super cool ending.

I dunno. It's like a really good anime series or something.

Class 👌🏾

As everyone one of Apollos Thorne’s works; quality is a trademark; consistent flow even with continuous transitioning from 1st-2nd-3rd person narration, spinning the imagination continuously, enticing emotions just to the right amount, despite of the smart censoring of grizzly and intimate scenes, while maintaining a well balanced drama that permeates the plot.
In short; Apollos Thorne signature!

Pretty much all of cradle series in one book

It's not a bad series and it's great value for a credit with over 30 hours of audio, but not the most intriguing story.

it's ok

I feel that the first 50 chapters could be condensed to 20-30. there is a lot of story a lot of interactions.

it's definitely a cultivation novel. which I don' mind one bit. I enjoy the technicalities and the breakthroughs. but what I also enjoy is the combat, unfortunately the combat isn't described enough until after I think chapter 50. much too vague before then except for a couple times I think I remember.

I understand you gotta build relationships and characters, but Elder Kong ( or Khang ) was a short and sweet introduction with just the right amount of development to make you have an opinion and understand them. and although he isn't a main elder, he is one of my favorites. I felt that there was too much building between the prodigies. and that you could develop their relationship quicker and more effectively without the length of about 50 chapters.

stuff happened within the 50 chapters or so but I don't know how to describe it... maybe too much fluff. plenty of cultivation not enough training or fights. more just talking...

overall this is ok, but it doesn't get interesting till after about 50 chapters for me. where you are finally introduced to interesting characters of conflict with interesting backgrounds and you start getting into the good techniques and breakthroughs as well as interesting training and fights.

the ending was enough for me to give the next audiobook a chance. but if it has too much dialogue for 50 chapters like this one and it doesn't go into the cultivation, techniques, training , fighting and mystery of the upper realms like it's hinting... I won't be looking into the following after.

I am not a fan of the voice actor and actress. maybe I'm just used to more variety in voices ... but they lacked even in voicing enough expression when they would have it, instead it's as if both practice heart of the ice and forgot to turn it off for their voices...

I took a chance.

This author is new to me, the narrortors are new to me. But, I have a weakness for cultivation novels. and this one, is one of the best. The MCs are well done, absolutely wonderful character growth. Trials that are tough but are over come with hard work and effort.

The plot point involving the female MC (I cannot spell the names) and the prince was heartbreaking, but I am happy the author didn't go into detail, and that it was handled in a way that fit the story and proper mental health care.

the narrators have a decent range of voices, the male narrator has very similar voices for each male character, but distinguishable enough.

the female Narrator has a fantastic range and definitely gave more vocal ranges to make each character stand out. I love this book and I cannot wait until the next one comes out.

GREAT CHARACTER BUILDING

This first book in this series did a great job with character building. The story nicely put together and keep me wanting more. The only downside is that book 2 is not out yet, but hopefully it do not take to long.

Real cultivation book

Apollos Thorne has done an amazing job creating an intricate and detailed world. Characters are well fleshed out and experiences (however horrific) are portrayed in vivid and realistic ways. AT does a great job discussing sensitive topics.

The story at times can get deep. Some parts can drag on, but, overall it is really good. The book is one of AT's more serious books and I'm glad I listened to it.

Finally, I can see what AT tried to do by having each narrator read the different perspectives of the MCs, however, it wasn't for me.

Good fun, but very slow start

This is a good long story for the price of only one credit. However, the first quarter or the book is very slow with not much happening. The narration is only average as the two narrators only have limited ability to change tone and pace for different characters and moods, therefore the story is read out flat and in a monotone. These two negative factors, the very slow and uneventful start and the poor performance of the narration end up knocking the rating of this story from 5 stars to about 3.5 ish over all when compared to the 5 star story and performance of Will writes cradle series which is much superior to this one.

Overall good

A little slow in places but an alright listen. Always nice to have multiple VAs for the male and female parts though the voice saying who the current chapter about is waaay too loud and sounds awful, bad enough that it was annoying even though its just one word every chapter.

Great book not a fan of the narration

Great book definitely grab it! I've not had too many books with multiple narrators, but I really really didn't like this one. Male voice for male pov and female voice for female pov was great, but then male characters with a new femaleesk voice I found it jarring especially the MC's Dad and it really took away from the epic story for me. Yeah seriously not a fan 1 star for narration, I'm gonna pick up the books for this series and would suggest you do the same if you agree.

Side note, as epic as this is I don't think it was worth delaying Underworld.

Good book

It’s a good book. The characters have depth and emotion. The story itself feels like it was meant to be 2 books but was made into one but that’s great because I wouldn’t want to have waited for more books like I do now. The voices were great from both narrators. overall 15/15

Fantastic Cultivation Epic

While the narration falls a little flat at times, the handoff between chapters of the main characters and the dual male and female voices were great overall.

This is also a fantastic beginning for a classic cultivation epic (other than one of the main events that still doesn’t sit quite right with me personally.. but.. that’s more, as I say a personal preference).

For the most part, we follow our 2 main characters as they find out what they really care about, face off against plots most foul and pompous cultivators that dare to show off their might to their lessers.

For as long and amazing as this book is, it is absolutely worth the credit if you are interested in this style of fantasy.

It's ok

I'm at chapter 12, about 5 hours in and I dislike the swapping narrators its add nothing expect annoyance keep the same people for each voice through out the whole book, I found it makes the character feel disjointed when swapping each chapter. the narrators aren't doing a bad job its very jarring to the listener when they swap or at the very least, keep the same voices for the characters and swap the main narrator each chapter. The story so far is ok I've read better and I've read worse. But this is the first time I've come across a book that just flat out swap narrators. if I ever come across another book that decides to do that I'd just refund it right away to be honest. I'll finish this one because I didn't know how jarring it was going to be and I'm 5 hours in now so might as well finish.
In summary just keep the characters with the same narrators all the way through.
