In Rapt, acclaimed behavioral science writer Winifred Gallagher makes the argument that the quality of your life largely depends on what you choose to pay attention to and how you choose to do it. Gallagher grapples with provocative questions - Can we train our focus? What's different about the way creative people pay attention? Why do we often zero in on the wrong factors when making big decisions? - driving us to reconsider what we think we know about attention.

Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human.

Doing less might seem counterintuitive, but doing less is more productive, because you’re concentrating on the work you actually want to be doing.

Overwork is the new normal. Rest is something to do when the important things are done - but they are never done. Looking at different forms of rest, from sleep to vacation, Silicon Valley futurist and business consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang dispels the myth that the harder we work the better the outcome. He combines rigorous scientific research with a rich array of examples of writers, painters, and thinkers - from Darwin to Stephen King - to challenge our tendency to see work and relaxation as antithetical.

This is a book for working women and mothers who are ready to release the culturally inherited belief that their worth is equal to their productivity, and instead create a personal and professional life that's based on presence, meaning, and joy. As opposed to focusing on "fitting it all in", time management, and leaning in, as so many books geared at ambitious women do, this book embraces the notion that through doing less women can have - and be - more.

Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

Throughout history, there's been one indelible quality that great leaders, makers, artists and fighters have shared. The Zen Buddhists described it as inner peace, the Stoics called it ataraxia and Ryan Holiday calls it stillness: the ability to be steady, focussed and calm in a constantly busy world. This quality, valued by every major school of thought from Buddha to Seneca, John Stuart Mill to Nietzsche, is urgently necessary today. And, Holiday shows, it is entirely attainable.

We all know a visionary leader when we see one. They're bold and prophetic and at the same time pragmatic. They don't just promote change - they drive it, while inspiring and mobilizing others to do the same. Visionaries like Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos possess a host of innate qualities that make them extraordinary, but what truly sets them apart is their ability to turn vision into action. Here, Innosight's Mark W. Johnson and Josh Suskewicz introduce a new way of thinking and managing, called "future-back", that enables any manager to become a practical visionary.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Paradigmatic shifts in the business landscape, known as inflection points, can either create new, entrepreneurial opportunities (see Amazon and Netflix) or they can lead to devastating consequences (e.g., Blockbuster and Toys R Us). Only those leaders who can “see around corners” - that is, spot the disruptive inflection points developing before they hit - are poised to succeed in this market. Columbia Business School Professor and corporate consultant Rita McGrath contends that inflection points, though they may seem sudden, are not random.

批評家のレビュー
"Laura Vanderkam is one of the world's leading experts in time management and productivity...her insights in Off the Clock can change your life." (Dorie Clark, author of Stand Out)
"Laura Vanderkam delivers a compelling and evidence-based argument that busyness is overrated in our current culture. Living a full life, at work and at home, is about doing the right things well, and confidently missing out on everything else." (Cal Newport, best-selling author of Deep Work)
あらすじ・解説
Learn to savour life's best moments - no matter how busy you are - through mind-set shifts that alter your perception of time.
Laura Vanderkam, the acclaimed author of What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, isn't like other time-management gurus. She's not trying to shave off 30 seconds here or there; she's interested in the emotional and psychological side of the 168 hours everyone has each week. Her message is that we all have more time than we think we do and can feel less stressed while getting more done.
With the right habits, you can live efficiently and effectively and yet still see time as abundant. For instance, Vanderkam teaches:
- How to clear your calendar of activities that are boring, stressful or simply not the best use of your time.
- Why tackling your top priorities during the hours when you have the most energy will change your perception of what it means to be productive.
- How to linger in great experiences while they're happening and why good memories seem to make time expand.
Packed with insights from busy yet relaxed professionals, including 'time makeovers' of people who are learning to use these tools, Off the Clock can inspire the rest of us to creative lives that are not only productive but enjoyable in the moment.

Another great book
I have been eagerly awaiting the launch of this book (particularly as it came out in the UK months later than the US) and it didn't disappoint. I have loved everything that Laura has written, but this one really struck a chord. Life is short, take time 'off the clock' and enjoy it!

Both enjoyable and wise
I chose this book after finishing I Know How She Does It by the same author, and enjoyed this one just as much. Warm, relatable, and full of practical advice on how to structure our lives and attitudes to get (paradoxically) more of a sense of freedom and abundance in our lived experiences. The author has a lovely reading voice which was a bonus - I like it when authors read their own books!
