Jane Austen
‘The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.’
An incisive satire of the gothic novel, Northanger Abbey is a charming coming-of-age tale written by one of Britain’s most cherished authors: Jane Austen.
Young, naive, and blessed with an overactive imagination, Catherine Morland has a passion for gothic romances that makes her see the world a little differently from her peers. The daughter of a country clergyman and sister to nine siblings, Catherine jumps at the chance for adventure when her wealthy neighbours, the Allens, invite her to Bath. There she befriends the handsome Henry Tilney and secures an invitation to his family's gothic-sounding home, Northanger Abbey. But as Catherine soon discovers, everything she’s learned from her avid fiction consumption is not quite a reflection of reality… A witty exploration of love, time and what it means to grow up, Northanger Abbey continues to captivate readers to this day.
Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was an English novelist. She is best known for her use of social commentary, wit and realism in her writing, which focussed on the English landed gentry in the eighteenth century. Austen’s novels have rarely been out of print, and have become some of the most widely adapted works in the history of English literature. She is still widely read and studied to this day.
