"A magnetic mix of creepy places, dark humour, horror and violence." (Sun)

あらすじ・解説

Brought to you by Penguin.

The chilling and compulsive new novel from the number one best-selling author.

We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.

It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast.

Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again—battered, frightened, convinced a shadowy 'They' are out to get him, and begging Lucy for help.

It sounds like paranoia, but what if he's right? What if he really is caught up in something bigger and darker than Lucy's ever dealt with before? What if the Bloodsmith isn't the only monster out there? And what's going to happen when Lucy goes after them?

A narrator can make or break a audio

I gave up after two hours. I could no longer stand the narrator turning every sentence into a breathy, OMG, something is happening suspenseful statement. It was just hideous. I’m so disappointed as I have thoroughly enjoyed MacBrides previous books and was looking forward to another thriller. Please bring back Steve Worsley or Ian Hanmore.

A disappointment after a long wait

I was thrilled when, at the end of 2021, I saw that there would be a new Stuart MacBride due out in April. Having read every book in the Logan McRae series I was looking forward to the return of my favourite characters including DCI Roberta Steel, PC Tufty QuirreL and Biohazard Bob Marshall.
It was released yesterday and I immediately downloaded it
This, the latest book from Stuart MacBride has a new cast of characters but none have the same, distinctive, personalities as those in the Logan McRae series.
I’m very aware that a change is a good as a rest but No Less the Devil is not, in my opinion, a change for the better. Where is the perfect mix of a gritty storyline, sometimes mixed with a very dry wit and excellent sense of humour?
But credit where it’s due, Cathleen McCarron’s narration was as excellent as that of Steve Worsley (narrator of the Logan McRae series).
So yes, it was interesting to listen to a favourite author’s change of pace etc but it wasn’t strong enough to hold my attention to the end and I gave up.
So please Mr MacBride, if you should read this, please resurrect Logan ‘Lazarus’ McRae. Go on, you know you want to.

Not His Usual Standard

I usually love MacBride’s novels, but all deftness of touch he has shown in his other work is lacking here.

Multiple serial killers running amok in Scottish cities is always going to be the stuff of outlandishly unrealistic plots, but in this novel it pushes that idea beyond either the artistic license allowed to the author, or the suspension of disbelief that can be asked of the reader.

There are several decent novels squeezed into this, and none of them can get out of the way of the others. You might expect this to cause confusion, but it doesn’t since so much of what I have seen described in the publicity as ‘shocking’, ‘you won’t see it coming’ etc etc were annoyingly obvious from fairly early on… I only listened past the halfway point in the hope I was wrong.

The narration was far from helpful to the cause. I know this narrator is popular, but I find her delivery very irritating, as she makes every line sound like a breathtaking surprise. It doesn’t build tension, I find it actually a bit patronising, and it demeans good writing and worsens poor writing.

I really hope this isn’t the beginning of a new series, because I have always looked forward to every new Stuart MacBride, and more of this character, or in this style would be a terrible disappointment.

Weird but not in a good way

Mucking fuddled to say the least, what has happened? I’m a huge Stuart MacBride fan. I ordered the signed copy of the book last year and was so excited when it arrived but kept putting it down as it was gripping me. So decided to try the audio version as I had listened to the majority of the other novels. Firstly, was disappointed not to hear Steve Worsley or Ian Hanmore, but on I went. I found myself tuning out to her voice which when listening to an audible book isn’t the thing to happen but I tried to keep the faith. For me, the storyline and narration wasn’t what I loved about Stuart MacBride, where was the humour? I didn’t warm to any of the characters and after 18.5 hours can’t really name them either. I’m so sorry to be critical as no way can I do better but please please can we have some more Logan and Roberta?

Shocked!!

Stuart Mcbride is my favourite Author, words fail me, this is probably the worse book I have read, I still keep wondering if this was really written by him! I loved his other books but this is shockingly confusing- it’s several hours I won’t get back!! I kept listening hoping it would make sense at some point, no it just got worse, I hope he isn’t going to make this a series I will have to find another Author to like as much, I certainly won’t read any of these series

Not a fan of the narrator

Stuart MacBride is one of my favourite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint, but I REALLY struggled with the narrator on this one. Everything is narrated in the same breathless tone, presumably to try to build suspense, but when someone putting a piece of paper in a file, for example, is read with the same emphasis and intonation as someone running from a killer, it loses any meaning. I hope, if this is the start of a series, the choice of narrator is reconsidered for the next book.

Weird

That was just bizarre, kept reading in the hope it would get better. Nothing like his other books, only the narration made me carry on!

Please bring back Logan and Steele

Sorry I just couldn't finish this book, didn't like the narrator, protracted descriptions. Steve Worsley did a much better job. Sad because I was looking to this book

Ah well maybe next time....

Stuart MacBride goes above and below!

Well what a read. I have to confess that I stopped three quarters of the way through and started again because I really couldn’t get my head around it. Glad I did. I had faith in Stuart. I hadn’t spent years reading his books NOT to believe it would come good. Like the “heroine” he has gone dark. What an imagination to conjure such a cast of characters. Well worth the read, as always. Chalk up another gold star to Mr MacBride!

Disappointed

Have enjoyed all the other books but had to abandon this one after a few chapters. I just couldn’t follow or engage with the narration. Not sure why but it just didn’t compute with me

Am so disappointed I tried listening but gave up

After reading the Ash Henderson then all of the Logan Macrae series thought I’d try the new book ,
Oh am really disappointed am not sure if it’s the narrator or the book story or both . I just couldn’t get into it & gave up after 3 hours.
Am now hesitant to read any new books but go back to the older SM that I haven’t read yet .
Sorry but am not a fan of this one :(

What a sodding disappointment

This sodding book is a sodding disappointment. There’s a serial killer who cuts his victims up and takes bits away; there’s a police officer on his trail who has just come back to work after a traumatic incident; there’s even a meat works with plenty of hanging carcasses. And every 4th word is “sodding”. So far, so Stuart MacBride. Then things start to get all weird. The main character appears to go insane and it becomes unbelievably tedious, and just plain unbelievable. There’s lots of people getting battered over the head and the narrator gets to scream a lot - which is pretty hard to take as it’s an ugly sound.

The plot loses it and the main character is no Logan McRae or Ash Henderson; she’s barely likeable when it comes down to it. And she goes “arghhhhhhhhhh” way too much.

Disappointing.

Bring back Logan McRae!

I was so eager to hear this new work, but I was disappointed.
I found it hard to get into the story at the start, but I believe that was mainly due to the narrator. Her voice, while quite pleasant in and of itself, I found entirely distracting, and more suited to a children’s television host than to the narrator a “gritty” crime novel.
Eventually, I discovered that listening at 0.8 speed made the experience more bearable, with rather less breathy insouciance, but that had the unfortunate side effect of causing all of the male characters to sound like village idiots.
After some perseverance, and quite a few rewinds, I did get caught up in the story … only to find it went off the rails at terminal velocity in the latter stages.
I did not find the characters engaging or even amusing, as so many others are in previous works. My favourite character all through this was Charlie, and even he turned into a parody of himself, so I’d gone off him, rather, by the end.
The plot was elaborate and torturous, and so unlikely, even allowing that it is fiction, that it might more properly be called crime fantasy.
I really could not recommend this book, not even to die-hard fans.
I can only implore the author to bring back Logan McRae, or any of the other great characters from earlier works, and to PLEASE ensure that his books are narrated by someone with a voice more suited to the style … or even better, narrate some more himself, as I love listening to him read his own works!

Not the Usual Stuart MacBride

I personally didn’t enjoy this very much. First half was good. The story became a bit predictable in the second half. Lacks the humour I’ve come to expect from MacBride’s work. Well written but didn’t appeal to me personally. Narrator was good but not a patch on Steve Worsley.

Very disappointing.

This might have been bearable with a different reader - not the gasping kindergarten story reader. As it was, it was impossible to concentrate on the story.

Say What?

Well. Yes. Umm. Started off ok...then the 'Arrgghhh' outbursts started from the narrator. One would have been forgivable but after around the fortieth, I was somewhat near to smashing my speaker in with a mallet.
Then there was the sudden move off on to a totally different tangent. Chapter 41 to be precise. I thought my app had had a brain fart and skipped a chapter. I went back to the previous chapter. Nope. Not the app having a brain fart, just the author. To say it became a murky, bizarre, confusing and infuriating mess from there on in would be a small understatement.
When I start a book, I have to finish it and this one saw me marking down the time to claw my way to the finale.
Jeezo. Would have been quite happy from somebody from the creepy Hogwarts for serial killers and psychopaths to come and smash my head in.
Do yourself a favour and pick something else. If the strangled, breathy 'arrrggggghhhhs' don't get you, the unbelievable plot certainly will.

Yeah but yeah nah

Standard procedural turns Scots Psycho, turns Brave New World… not a great choice of narrator - I shuddered every time she - well whatever it was that passed for screaming, groaning or farting…. Would certainly be on my list for the nasty little wannabe StNickers to use for a qualifying exam.

What the hell happened during recording?

I wasn't expecting a "choose your own adventure"!! Surely some serious error was made during the recording of this book. One minute the heroine is mysteriously whisked into some serial killer's torture dungeon (how she wound up there I couldn't tell), next minute she is knocking on the door of said serial killer, doesn't recognize him as the man who has been stalking her (though in an earlier chapter, she has recognised him from a photograph and set the entire Old Castle police force on a hunt for him).

What a mess. Clearly the narrator has been given a rough draft in which the author has forgotten to remove some of his speculative endings.

I pre-ordered this book as I am a hugh fan of Stuart MacBride and thought this story was brilliant until I got near the end, where the story makes no sense at all, due to the narrator being supplied with an unedited manuscript.

I suggest anyone thinking of buying this hold off until the mixup is put right.
