Interesting and thoughtful with some practical tips

Ever since a very good friend and neighbor died at a much to early age from Alzheimer’s, I’ve been doing a lot of research and reading on how to best prevent such a horrifically slow and debilitating disease. While this book is not specifically about the prevention of Alzheimer’s, its content is about the best understood ways of keeping the brain the healthiest it can be, and backed by scientific evidence. I particularly liked the sections in each chapter such as Neuro Gym, which provide the practical tips that one can take to support the chapter’s focus, and Neuro Busted that proves common myths wrong. The narration was also excellent, with a voice that was upbeat in a good way (not overly so) and had a good cadence. I will definitely be implementing the practical tips that I don’t already practice into my lifestyle.

Good but probably highly edited

Good book, nice listen, informative. However, the flow was choppy and I feel that much of what Dr. Jandial wanted to say was probably edited out to keep the book short.

Some Practical Advice

Some good stories of the brain’s ability to recover and continue to thrive. Not a biohacking book but does offer sound advice from a well trained doctor. The future is bright for the brain but you need to work and feed it good energy and exercise

I'm no brain surgeon but I loved this book

I listen to a ton of books like this and but this one stands out. So credible because the author is an actual brain surgeon but he writes the book so it is understandable and relatable to anyone. I hope to relisten at some point.

One of the best non-fiction books I've listened to

I was pleasantly surprised by how well this came together. While the title and subtitle seem to indicate the focus is on practical application "brain tips", I would estimate that it's really about 40% biology/neurology backgrounder, 40% case studies, and 20% practical application. The good news is that it's *all* captivating, however I did spend the first half of the book wondering when the promised "secrets to boost performance ..." were coming. The latter half of the book is a bit heavier in this regard, even dedicating a few full chapters to the topic.

I also thought the length of this book was just about perfect -- Coming in at slightly less than 7 hours, it doesn't get overly long in the tooth. I wish more editors and publishers would keep the length "where it should be" rather than trying to get to that "magic" 350-pages, 10-hours range (or longer). Having an extra 3 hours of filler would have ruined this book.

One minor complaint, though - While the initial overview of the brain's regions and function was great (and necessary to help explain later concepts and cases), it would be nice to have a PDF supplement for this information. I'd venture to say that chapter should be provided entirely as a PDF with diagrams -- It's not worth purchasing the entire book over again in print or Kindle to get that information, but should be made available with the audio since this is (a) very complex information which works better with pictures, (b) likely needs to be reviewed several times for the average person to grasp it, and (c) is an important component in understanding the rest of the book.

The narration was perfectly suited for this type of material. Great inflections and even emotion helped bring this non-fiction material to "life".

amazing from beginning to end

The author is brilliant, it is well thought out material, well read and presented. He is entertaining and though provoking, and listening to him speak about highly complicated subjects in a understandable manner is an artform

interesting by not a must read

I love learning new things and was surprised that a lot of what was in the book was fairly common knowledge. It was reassuring in a way but not the real mind stretcher I was hoping for. A great book for high schoolers to learn about the brain in an easily accessible and interesting way.
