あらすじ・解説

When writer Paul Stewart heads to the idyllic Italian town of Montalcino to finish his already late book, it seems like the perfect escape from stressful city life. Upon landing, however, things quickly take a turn for the worse when he discovers his hired car is nowhere to be found. With no record of any reservation and no other cars available, it looks like Paul is stuck at the airport. That is, until an enterprising stranger offers him an unexpected alternative.

While there may be no cars available, there is something else on offer: a bulldozer. With little choice in the matter, Paul accepts, and so begins a series of laugh-out-loud adventures through the Italian countryside, following in the wake of Paul and his Italian bulldozer. A story of unexpected circumstance and a lesson in making the best of what you have, My Italian Bulldozer is a warm holiday listen guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Sublime

As always Alexander McCall Smith delivers a story filled with tenderness, humor and a touch of whimsy. His stories are good for the soul. The narration was a delight. The setting in Tuscany was spot on with mention of many things that are part of the Tuscan food and wine culture.

Lovely story, ended too soon!

I loved the entire feel of this book! It made me want to go to Tuscany, and learn Italian. I really enjoyed the humorous bits. However, I found the story a little bit truncated, and would have liked it to go on longer. Some more character development in the middle sections would have been great.

Lovely read but one flaw

I thoroughly enjoyed the tale and indeed expected no less of a McCall Smith title. I listened virtually at a single sitting. My enjoyment was marred by only one thing. Although the narrator's voice and rendition were very pleasant, he thoroughly mispronounced most of the Italian words in the text. I understand a narrator cannot be expected to master all foreign language content but surely, given the Italian setting, and the fact that Italian is hardly an obscure tongue, some rudimentary pronunciation check might have been feasible?
Still, a truly heartwarming listen.

Good quality easy listening.

Gentle offbeat story (within the "go to Italy, save your sanity" genre), well written, sensible length, not everything spelled out, but not too obscured. Narration fine, albeit some dodgy accent and pronunciation decisions.
I don't always want gloomy listening, and this is cheery.

Brilliant book!

Absolutely loved it. Very funny and I was laughing out loud while driving and listening. The narrator was excellent with the different voices and accents used to bring the character and the story alive.

good easy book

enjoyed this book, bit silly and certainly no need to concentrate too hard as simple story line.

Misleading description

I did not know the author, and from the description thought the book was about food and wine in Tuscany with humourous stories related to the bulldozer.

Turned out more to be a light love triangle and all the emotions involved with this.

Well read not sure if I will buy any more in the series.

An amusing tale set in beautiful Tuscan country

I struggled to get into the story, even leaving it to one side for a couple of weeks, but then I found myself wanting to be in Montelcino, with it's sunshine, olive groves and grapevines. The characters were quite believable, with some amusing twists and turns in the tale.

A virtual journey to Italy!

I could picture the scenery and almost taste the food. Andrew McCall Smith’s writing is as delightful as ever. However, I found some of the “Italian” hard to understand as it was a bit mumbled and not quite an Italian accent!

Twit lit

Having enjoyed ladies number 1 detective some years ago I was hoping for something similarly witty and clever. This was a book club recommendation and a group of us read it. The feedback is at the end of next month... I’m not looking forward to that! The storyline was inconceivably ridiculous from the start, full of stereotypes predictable plot and felt hurriedly written. I guess it’s obvious stupidity and shallow narrative makes it easy and not thought provoking. Ideal for a worn out grafter who doesn’t want any literary challenges whilst taking a short journey on a bus.

Not a very good listen

One that has been recommended by a writer in Decanter magazine as a 'great wine book'. It is neither a great wine book or great book. The narrator did their best but you know what they say, you can't polish a t**d. I would recommend avoiding it.

Heartwarming

Absolutely loved the story. Made me want to go to Tuscany straight away.
There is a gentleness to Mc Call Smith's stories that show his deep understanding of humanity without having to resort to exaggeration.
