Tired of being bossed around by a man posing as her cousin, Melinda Post flees Pittsburgh, and heads west to marry Bart Brown, a young newspaper owner.
Although Bart has advertised in the Matrimonial News, Melinda doesn’t answer his Mail Order Bride advert straight away. Still reeling from her 'cousin’s' deceit, she wants to see for herself what kind of man Bart is, before she promises herself to him. So, she poses as a married woman, and takes a job with Bart at his newspaper. She falls in love with him as they work together, reporting the news, writing interest pieces, and even escaping dangerous criminals. Melinda learns firsthand what a fine man he is.
However, Bart believes she’s married, so he won’t give in to his feelings for her - and he begins writing another Mail Order Bride. Melinda fears she’s too late to admit the truth. She fears they won’t be able to withstand her massive lie. Can Bart, a man committed to honesty, ever forgive her? Will he cut off his new involvement for her? Or, is Melinda truly too late?
