NOT GREGORY HAYES

Some reviews said this was the Gregory Hayes translation. That's what I wanted, the contemporary, more relatable version.

Instead this is as dense as the King James Bible, full of overly-ornate "thee"s, "thou"s, and overly intricate sentences written more to make the translator feel smart than communicate the essence of Aurelius's work.

Review for PETER BATCHELOR AUDIBLE.

Maybe this version works for some people but I can’t get past Peter Batchelor’s narration. I initially purchased it because it was the cheapest and I preferred to listen to it while I would be unable to sit and read. I think an editor should have ran this entire audio file through audio software (DAW) and implemented a DE ESSER. All the “s", "z", "ch", "j" and "sh” sounds are extremely prominent and just irk my ears so bad I had to turn it off. Thanks but I recommend you spend your money on a better version even if that means spending a few more dollars. There’s a reason why this one is so incredibly cheap and in this case you truly get what you pay for.

Great narration.

Would you listen to Meditations again? Why?

I would listen again because I have read this book twice before and each time it remains fresh. And while I consider Peter Batchelor an excellent narrator, this is one of those books that must be studied in print as well as heard to get the maximum benefit.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Meditations?

I was especially impressed this time around with all the parallels to Biblical and especially New Testament/Pauline writings. For a non-Christian stoic who had a most unfavorable view of Christians, the similarity to Christian writings in his Meditations are striking.

good book

Trying to switch up my reading. Good book. It's interesting to see the thoughts and perspectives of someone that lived almost 2000 years ago. The author was very intelligent and well spoken.. @XTRNL619

An Interesting look into Roman Stoic Philosophy

This is an interesting look into Roman Stoicism, but the translation is in an older English format (think KJV Bible) which makes it feel a bit hard to concentrate on sometimes.
Still an interesting read and I would recommend staying for the brief overview of the author's life at the end for a better perspective on how he saw the world around him.

...as translated by Shakespeare

This translation is, for me, basically worthless. It must have been translated in the 17th century. There was a 9 word sentence that had the words thee, thine, thou, thy and thyself...in a 9 word sentence! Glad it was only 2 dollars I wasted. If you love olde english this might be for you.

clarity of narrator is not the greatest

The voice clarity of the narrator is bad and hard to understand. This made me not want to continue with this book.

Translation

If these journals were translated from Latin, why would you us words such as "doth" and "thee" in the modern day? The language used is unnecessarily old timey in an attempt to sound fancy.

great narrator, tough books

the narrator dies an excellent job given the material he is presented with. Aurelius, of course, is brilliant.
easily understood version of this masterpiece

review

The only problem is, that the sound quality is not the best, you really have to struggle to understand the words at times.

The narration...

I brought this version because it's super cheap and the narrator has a nice old school accent which I thought would add to the book, but actually, it's almost impossible to understand! I will be returning this book I will buy the actual version with up to date English narration.

My favourite book

Narration is clear, and the voice is rich and inviting. Couple this with the Stoic philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, and you'll have a great listen.

Original Roman text read at a relatively fast pace

It's the original text written in the then current style of Roman writing (think shakespear) without any modern translation, and whilst I might not be averse to listening to the original. The pace makes it quite difficult.

Just as my brain is trying to construct the sentence in it's original form and translate it into the current meaning the narrator has moved on.

It's difficult to understand and almost impossible to digest.

The narrator's pace if slowed down may help but it would still be difficult.

Meaningful but stagnating

Overall the book has good content, it's really something you should try to consider and take your time processing. Depending on your taste, perhaps words like "doth, hath, est, and he'eth" can become repetitive. And the sentences can become...superfluous? overdone? Marcus used a lot of commas instead of full stops. But Seriously, it is a good book and I do recommend it for someone who is patient and truly curious upon the art.

Fantastic Read..

Rediscovering my guidance of stoicism obviously meditations by Marcus Aurelius was a first to reach refresher. You will find many wise words within.

However, the Narration of this version while the voice suited someone like Marcus Inner voice perfectly, the pace of reading felt a little rushed.

A philosopher for our times

Marcus Aurelius’ landmark philosophical text, espousing his own brand of stoicism emphasising justice, honesty, charity, and above all, self-control and personal reflection.

Superb British narration makes this the ideal version to listen to.
