あらすじ・解説

Featured title on PBS's The Great American Read in 2018

As a New England mother struggles to support her family in the wake of her husband's service in the Civil War, her four daughters struggle, too - caught between childhood dreams and the realities of burgeoning adulthood. For Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, raised in integrity and virtue, negotiating the right path in life means making choices that will either narrow or expand their destinies.

Based on the author’s life, Little Women transcends genre, gender, and class with its examination of personal quests, societal restrictions, family ties, and the end of innocence.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to listen to a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

Little Women, narrated by Sandra Burr

Ms. Burr makes the prose come alive. It is like listening to a radio play. As a listener, you trust in her strong narrative voice and miss it when you put the book down for awhile. The text is a great moral prescription for men and women young and old, but I believe the audio book helped me perceive the moral nuance more clearly. Reading alone, I would sometimes grow distracted by some of the longer philosophical passages, so if that's the case for you, the audio by Sandra Burr is recommended.

fantastic performance of a classic!

I love classic books, and when I can find them in a well-performed audiobook so much the better. This is extremely well done, the narrator has a lovely pleasing voiced and a very nice Pace. I enjoyed this book tremendously!

Gentlemen, give it some time.

I had to get through the first half of the novel to appreciate the second half where I found the circumstances to become more interesting and the characters more relatable. I don't believe the family should have been described as poor. They had a servant and the historic Orchard House would have been considered an upper middle class home of the time. All of the familes associations are with upper middle - wealthy individuals with upper class sensibilities and expectations. The exception being the "poor" family the March sisters bring their Christmas meals to. Perhaps the March family was struggling with father away but if they had fallen from the upper class they didn't fall any further than middle class. Also, with all the early gossipy talk of personality traits and societal propriety there's almost no discussion of the most monumental event, the civil war, despite their beloved father fighting in it.

However, once the story jumped ahead a few years I was able to put these early annoyances aside and appreciate the girls individual character development through their experiences and the loves that entered their lives.

Long overdue

I'm not sure how I escaped middle school, high school, and college without reading this one. I've been wanting to see the Little Women movie, but wouldn't allow myself to until I'd read/listen to the book. I loved the play of the language and found myself noting so many instances where common phrases we use today were used in the book and I wonder if they are common because Alcott coined them or if they were already part of the vernacular then. I did think the story dragged a bit toward the end and could have done without the chapter on Demi and Daisy. The resolution of Jo's story was fitting.

A classic nicely rendered!

Such a classic and well worth a listen for its vivid glimpse into the lives of a respectable but impoverished family in Civil War era America. The book has been loved for its warm descriptions of young people growing up, and sustained through their problems by their love for each other and their strong faith. These days, the faith aspect can seem a little overdone, and in the second part of the book the author almost mocks herself gently when one of the "Little Women", Jo, is trying to find her voice as a writer and veers wildly between overblown moral tales and tacky sensationalism. But it's the sense of gentle humour and clever observation which saves the book from being just another 19th century religious tract. These are real people, with real people's flaws, and we can love them as we'd love our real neighbours.
It was fun listening to this edition with my kids (tweens and teenagers) and comparing our observations!

Little Women

Sandra Burr is my absolute favorite narrator. I look for her in so many of audible books. She is so good. If it’s a British book I seek a British narrator of course. But for an American narrator, Sandra Burr is amazing!

This book is fantastic for all age’s I’ve seen all 3 movies with Katherine Hepburn just so so, with June Allyson & Elizabeth Taylor& Peter Lawford best version, and Winona Ryder good version as well. The book is much better all around though. So many more details and storyline that the movies can’t give you. I live books. This is worth listening to and reading over and over again!

I really enjoyed listening to this recording. The narrator did a fantastic job, she had a different voice for every character. I definitely recommend this to anybody who loves this book.
