Kamehameha the Great became the sovereign monarch during a time of rapid transition for his islands. His rivals were no longer limited to the kings of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. Amid this turmoil, Kamehameha chose to befriend Kaiana, a chief who had survived the battlefields of Maui and Kauai then travelled to China to learn the foreign arts of war. Kaiana ascended the ranks of Hawaiian society to become the most admired captain of Kamehamehaʻs armies.
