概要
Yeats writes this to remember his friend and theatre colleague Synge, who died early. Synge is portrayed as a last witness of the old ways of life in Ireland; full of humour, tenacity and tragedy. Yeats creates a portrait of a man and celebrates Ireland. John Millington Synge was a lonely, struggling writer in Paris, living, as a friend put it, on "a crust of bread and a Maryland cigarette", when W. B. Yeats urged him to go west to the Aran Islands. There, among people who still lived much as the Irish had in mediaeval times, he found what he had been looking for. They walked in cowhide slippers with the grace of wild animals and told their stories and myths in a mixture of English and Gaelic. That life inspired one book and four plays, and Synge became one of Ireland's literary greats. This edition also includes a note by his brother and painter Jack Butler Yeats, about a walk through Connemara with Synge, as well as a foreword by Kyle James Maclean.©2023 Kyle James Maclean (P)2023 Kyle James Maclean イングランド・アイルランド・スコットランド・ウェールズ カリブ海・ラテンアメリカ ヨーロッパ 世界文学 歴史小説
